Police are hunting for a gang of up to six young people who attempted to break into homes in

Biggera Waters, Pacific Pines and Surfers Paradise while armed with a machete.

The gang, which is also believed to be responsible for the theft of a BMW in Helensvale the previous night, were confronted by occupants during the attempted break-ins between 1.30am and 3am.

“My advice is they didn’t get into any homes, they’ve attempted to break in and people have come out and stopped them,” Chief Superintendent Craig Hanlon said.

“Witnesses are saying they appeared to be carrying what looked like a machete or large knife.”

Police said the same vehicle – a stolen black RAM – was used in all three incidents.

That vehicle was later found burnt out on Augustus Terrace in the Logan suburb of Kingston, with witnesses reporting the offenders decamped into the stolen BMW.

“We think the incidents are linked because there is a black RAM vehicle that appears to be connected with all of these incidents,” Chief Supt Hanlon said.

“Police eventually located that vehicle in Kingston later on that morning and the vehicle was burnt out.

“People who saw the vehicle when it was burnt out at Kingston saw the people from that vehicle then enter a BMW which we know was stolen from Helensvale last week.”

Chief Supt Hanlon said police were still working to identify the offenders, but believed that they appeared to be teenagers.

He appealed for anyone who may have seen either the stolen RAM or stolen BMW to come forward.

On Friday the owner of the stolen BMW had appealed on social media for help to find his vehicle, a 2012 model 320D with registration 269YHF.

Video shared by the car’s owner showed three hooded people, all wearing gloves and one carrying a torch, sneaking between vehicles outside his Ben Dalley Dr property.

The videos ended with one of the youths seen tearing down a security camera.

“Police received a report via Policelink of a break-and-enter at Ben Dalley Drive in Helensvale,” a police spokesperson said.

“The informant reported that access was gained to the property at around 10.30pm on June 6.

“Once inside, three offenders have stolen property and a set of keys.

“The offenders then gained access to a BMW and left the scene in the stolen vehicle.

“Investigations are continuing.”
