74-year-old allegedly assaulted after two men break in to with iron bar

Two men have been charged by police after they allegedly broke into a suburban Gold Coast home armed with an iron bar and assaulted a 74-year-old man.

A 74-year-old man was allegedly assaulted when two men armed with an iron bar broke into his Helensvale home at 7am on Monday.

Police allege the men stole property from the Baynton Ave address before fleeing in a white Mercedes.

The 74-year-old man was attended to by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital for observation.

Just under two hours later police were called to another alleged break and enter at Morfantaine Terrace in Parkwood

A Queensland Police spokesperson said the same white Mercedes Benz was seen.

“Following a short foot chase, police detained and arrested an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old male,” the spokesperson said.

An 18-year-old Logan man has since been charged with seven offences, including two counts of entering a dwelling and committing two counts of serious assault of a person over 60, possession of a knife in a public place, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and obstructing a police officer.

A 19-year-old Logan man has been charged with eight offences, including two counts of entering a dwelling and committing, two counts of serious assault of a person over 60, possession of a knife in a public place, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, obstruct police officer and assault police officer.

Both men are due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday May 14.
