The Tweed Seagulls Cyril Connell season has wrapped up and we have shone a light on some of the stars of the team and the unearthed gems within the squad.

The Seagulls finished the year with four wins and two losses and coach Chris Patison was full of praise for the way his squad handled adversity throughout the campaign.

“I was really happy with them, they had a great attitude, they really looked to improve at training and in game,” he said.

“It’s a difficult pool they’re in, there’s some of real quality teams but we had a super game against Wynnum, we might have lost 12-6 and we could have won that but I was really happy with their performance.

“That same week we beat Burleigh who have now made the grand final so it shows we were really close to the top teams and it was a successful season.

“Those games (against Burleigh) every year are exciting and that rivalry’s a real thing it’s really awesome.

“They’ve played club against each other or playing school footy against each other, the competition is strong but both teams handled it really well.”

Patison revealed the players who starred in each area of the field this season as well as a few payers who were surprise packets.

Backs

Basil Coates: Deployed on the right wing, Coates was superb throughout the year and improved week on week. He was a quick player who was a perennial threat to opposing defences and gained several metres for the team every team he ran out.

Seth Coe: “He played fullback but also played centre, he was a kid that just tried really hard every game and a great team player in that he would do those hard things and those tough things,” Patison said.

Sioeli Vea: “He played centre in the first round ... it was really strong performance but he injured his MCL. I think that game alone showed that he would have been a really strong performer and a handful each game,” Patison said.

Forwards

Viliami Fifita: “He was a big physical forward in attack in defence,” Patison said.

Josiah Fa’aoso: A quick middle forward who gained plenty of metres and racked up several post contact metres to help his side gain momentum.

Kobe Hauraki: “He’s our leader in the middle and he captained our last game as well. A great mix of skill and physical strength when required,” Patison said.

Kalani Patu: An elite all-round player. The left second row was powerful in attack and defence and was quick enough to break through and score a couple of tries this season.

Jai Bilish: The hooker was an elite performer every game as he guided the team’s direction and boasted an impressive ability to run and beat a tackle. His impact was felt across the board as his leadership was outstanding.

Surprise packets

Harley Peterson: Peterson showed plenty of promise at halfback before he picked up an injury in round 2. The son of former Gold Coast Titan Matt Peterson had his first taste of club rep rugby league this year and showed some impressive skill throughout his short time on the field and will definitely be a player to watch in years to come.

Sam Wall: The playmaker has been riddled by ACL injuries but he showed when he is on the field, he is an exciting talent who brings great skill and composure.

James Smith: A bottom-age five-eighth who is very brave and physical for his age. Despite his inexperience, Smith already possesses a strong game IQ and his tactical awareness for when to pass and kick is a class above.
