The Queensland Rugby League junior rep season is back for 2025 and there is plenty of excitement surrounding the Tweed Seagulls after an impressive opening round win over the Redcliffe Dolphins.
From Gold Coast Titans contracted stars, to school students making their presence felt, there is an abundance of talent within the squad.
Tweed coach Sam Meskell said the first round win will do wonders for the group ahead of the rest of the campaign.
“It was nice to get the first one out of the way and start on a positive note with a win,” he said.
“It’s always a bit of an unknown going into round 1 so the boys are really happy to get that one on the board.”
Outside backs
Raymond Puru
“Ray brings a lot of energy, he’s everywhere, he’s quite fit and likes to be involved as much as possible,” Meskell said.
“He has a knack of popping up at the right place at the right time.”
Hudson Pratt
“He’s the one that has impressed us,” Meskell said.
“He started on a train and trial, trialled well for us in September last year and we gave him and opportunity.
“He has trained really hard, he’s earned himself a spot in the squad and forced himself into the line-up.
“He’s safe under the high ball and a very reliable customer.”
Brody Malcolm
“Similar to Hudson, he trialled really well at the open trial,” Meskell said.
“(He) has a very strong carry and a great attitude in terms of wanting to learn and get better.”
Dylan Watkins
“He’s got some real speed, so he can play anywhere as an outside back but is a preferred fullback and played a bit of wing in the trials,” Meskell said.
Beau Hartmann
“A big physical outside back, he’s out injured at the moment but he brings a tough carry, a big body, he’s handy in the air and at running the ball out of trouble,” Meskell said.
Santino Pekepo-Tevaga
“He’s very athletic, he’s probably six foot three four, got great athletic ability and can finish tries on the edge,” Meskell said.
Hawaiki Morrison
“He’s moved over from New Zealand and signed with the Titans,” Meskell said.
“He’s more of a rugby union background so still learning the game but from one game watching him, he puts in a lot of effort and does all the little things.”
Sam Stephenson
“He’s with the Titans NRL squad, he played in the trial against the Broncos,” Meskell said.
“He’s having a taste of that top level, if we get him back he’ll be a massive asset for us.”
Sunny Kama
“Same as Sam, he is a Titans contracted player and trained with the NRL side,” Meskell said.
“He did get an opportunity in the trial against the Broncos, he has a great attitude, is a strong ball runner and improved his catching over the last few seasons so he will be important.”
Halves
Javon Andrews
“Also Titans contracted and did most of the pre-season at NRL level, he’s a tall, skilful five-eighth,” Meskell said.
Taj Leteo
“One of the boys who has played Cyril Connell for a couple of seasons and moved up to play Mal Meninga Cup,” Meskell said.
“He has a great attitude, is a tall half, likes to run and has a great kicking game.”
Zane Harrison
“Another NRL squad player with the Titans, he was captain last year and player of the year in the Meninga Cup so he’s one of the leaders,” Meskell said.
“He’s a really good well-rounded half.”
Hookers
Cory Pearse
“Returning from last years’ squad, he’s a great competitor and likes to get under opponents’ skin,” Meskell said.
“(He is) quite smart with his football and got good service and strong defence.”
Hadley Smith
“New to the squad this year, still learning the position of hooker, he played multiple positions as a junior but found a home at hooker,” Meskell said.
Hudson Towell
“He’s a Tweed Seagulls junior, who has come through the Northern Rivers rep system, he’s graduated into our squad and played his first game on the weekend and went really well,” Meskell said.
Middle forwards
Bodhi Sharpley
“He’s a great leader, good communicator for a middle forward, he motivates the players around him and works very hard and spent some time training with the Titans in pre-season,” Meskell said.
Zac Kumbamong
“He was great for us last year, he’s dynamic middle and can come on and break the game apart,” Meskell said.
“He has a very strong running game.”
Torino Jackson
“He’s another who has come through the Cyril Connell squad at Tweed last year and stepped up to Mal Meninga,” Meskell said.
“(He) started for us on the weekend and laid a good platform with his carries and defence.”
Cooper Bai
“He’s another full-time Titans contracted player, his dad Marcus actually played for the Melbourne Storm,” Meskell said.
“He went to Marymount College and has moved from the Future Titans system and got a game against the Broncos and didn’t look out of place.”
Isaac Harrison
“He’s Zane’s twin brother, he’s our other co-captain and a competitor, a great leader and doesn’t take a backwards step,” Meskell said.
Billy Wellard
“Similar to a few of the forwards, a fit hard working middle with a great attitude towards learning,” he said.
“Another who was a rugby union player coming through high school at TSS and moved to rugby league.”
Roko Bilish
“Him and his younger brother are both at the club, he’s made so much improvement, worked hard on his game and competing with some of the best middles,” Meskell said.
Ethan Jackson
“He was one of the Cyril Connell top players last year and stepped up for us,” Meskell said.
“Unfortunately he had an injury but is almost ready to go and will be important in next couple of years.”
Edge forwards
Taylan To’a
“He also spent a few weeks with the NRL in pre-season, he’s only 18 still, so he still has two years of Mal Meninga potentially, he has great physical attributes, is aggressive,” he said.
Cruz Dangerfield
“He’s only 18 and he is another physical aggressive back rower who has spent some time in pre-season with the Storm academy,” Meskell said.
Toran O’Donnell
“His best attributes are his fitness, his attention to detail and he’s someone the boys love playing with because they know he won’t let them down,” he said.
Devin Bates-Wellington
“He’s in the future Titans system at the moment, he can play second row and centre and he’s in year 12 at PBC (Palm Beach Currumbin),” Meskell said.
Jye Watton
“He had a significant foot injury that he came back from and has been training really hard in the rehab,” Meskell said.
“He’s in the Future Titans system and went to Marymount with Cooper.”
Marlie Barry
“Another who has come up from the Tweed Cyril Connell side, he is at PBC as well in year 12 and a hard working back rower,” he said.
“(Barry) likes to play in the middle and has a good defensive work rate.”
