MARYMOUNT COLLEGE V ST MICHAEL’S COLLEGE

OPEN BOYS DIVISION 1

NOTE: Marymount only supplied last names for players

Marymount College has opened its Open Boys Division 1 account with a 26-4 win over St Michael’s College on Wednesday night.

After a narrow two-point loss to Keebra Park the week earlier, Marymount proved it’s still a force to be reckoned with in the Titans Schools League in piling on 20 unanswered points to set up the big win.

The opening stages of the clash between two Confraternity rivals as tough and tight as expected, with both sides completing their sets and showing great intent in defence.

Marymount was the first to draw blood through hard-running lock Olive. A basic crash play next to the posts did the damage and Follett added the extras for the early lead.

Not to be outdone, St Michael’s lock Oska Eldridge crossed moments later down the other end with a dancing spin move out of danger before diving over the line.

Marymount was next to march down the field and nearly extended its lead when a deft kick from five-eight McLaughlin was missed by the diving winger.

However from the scrum restart it was crafty hooker Follett with the show and go straight through the puzzled St Michael’s line for the easiest try under the posts.

With its lead out beyond a converted try, Marymount was eager to hammer home the first-half advantage and did so right on halftime through winger Leary, who pounced on a great grubber from five-eight McLaughlin to the corner post.

The second half started much the same as the first, with both sides trading blows before Marymount broke the deadlock when big, bustling centre Meehan crashed over on the right.

It almost got worse for St Michael’s moments later when Marymount attacked the right edge again, but this time fullback Zade Roy was there to make the incredible chase down tackle to drag his opposite number into touch.

But when school captain Aston Bai barged over on the right to make it 26-4 to Marymount, the writing was well and truly on the wall.

The final 10 minutes was played at a stalemate, with both sounds waiting out the final whistle.

Marymount 26 (Olive, Follett, Leary, Meehan, A. Bai tries; Follett 3/5 goals) def. St Michael’s 4 (O. Eldridge tries; O. Eldridge 0/1 goals)

MARYMOUNT COLLEGE V MIAMI SHS

OPEN BOYS DIVISION 2

A stunning four-try performance from winger Dylan Stensholm has propelled Miami SHS to a dominant 42-0 victory over Marymount College in the Open Boys Division 2 clash on Wednesday evening.

Stensholm was electric on the left wing, crossing for three tries in 10 second-half minutes to go with one in the opening half as Miami ran away with the win at Nerang Roosters JRLFC.

The match started with Marymount camped inside Miami territory – repeat sets pinning the dark blue and white on their own line.

Miami’s bend-don’t-break defence was impressive in the face of Marymount’s onslaught and after almost 10 minutes, they were finally able to play out form their own half with the scores still at deadlock.

Across midfield, a shifting play to the left found the hands of Dylan Stensholm and the speedy winger did the rest. A step inside his opposite number opened a gap and he raced down the touchline to the cheers of the Miami faithful, before running back toward the posts to open the scoring.

From the kick-off Miami returned to the try line this time on the right edge, with fullback Billy Tonkin the beneficiary of some smart ball playing close to the line.

Marymount was next to create a scoring chance, revisiting Miami’s half for the first time since the opening stages of the match, but again they could not crack the line.

With halftime fast approaching Marymount again looked poised to finally cross for a score, but the inside ball from five-eight Jaxon Rodgers bounced off his receiver’s chest and another chance went begging for the boys in light blue.

Miami started with possession in the second half and, after dual penalties pushed them into attacking range, Casper Evans outpaced the covering defender to race to the left corner post to score.

Trailing 16-nil the Marymount team started to look tired – and Miami noticed.

From a scrum play deep inside their own half, Miami kicked over the line, noticing no defender at the back, and it was a two-on-one in Miami’s favour to the loose ball.

Stensholm was the beneficiary, scooping it up and racing away under the posts for his second of the match.

Five minutes later and the speedster had a hat-trick – his quick footwork at the line mesmerising the Marymount defence to touch down under the posts once again.

Not finished yet, Stensholm pounced on a loose ball at halfway in the ensuing set and was once again off to the races and under the posts. He was clipped in the leg while scoring and there were fears when he went down holding his leg, but the winger was back on his feet not long after.

Miami’s period of dominance finally began to dwindle, with Marymount twice more testing the line without breaking through.

At midfield, Miami’s Casper Evans took an intercept – almost – to the house; taken down metres from the line but not before his wild offload fell into the lap of Zane Wilson for the easiest of tries.

MARYMOUNT COLLEGE V ST MICHAELS COLLEGE

YR 9/10 Boys Division 1

Hadley Smith crossed for a double and Marymount had six individual tryscorers in a 38-nil rout of St Michael’s on Wednesday afternoon.

From the opening whistle Marymount’s forwards asserted their dominance but it was sloppy errors, particularly in the second half, that ultimately cost St Michael’s any chance of victory.

With Marymount’s first possession of the match, back-rower Kyden Ring showed a deceptive turn of speed to cut through a gap in the St Michael’s defensive line, before he was brought down next to the posts. Smart work from rake Hadley Smith to spy the split defence followed, and from dummy half Marymount’s number nine crashed over for the first points of the contest.

St Michael’s looked to have hit back in the ensuing set through fullback Teddy Foster, when a good shifting play to the left put Foster in a gap and gunning for the line. But the referee ruled he knocked the ball on during grounding and the four points went begging.

From the restart Marymount immediately went on the offensive – Smith again breaking the line to get the blue and white within scoring distance. A shallow bomb from halfback Charlie Sewell was plucked from the sky by winger Harper Jenkins and in the scramble he found his way through a gap to run over and score.

Smelling blood Marymount came again minutes later, and centre Joshua Trowbridge appeared poised to break away down the left edge for another try. Instead, a gritty try-saving tackle from St Michael’s five-eight Xavier Cashman dragged the centre into touch and the red and white restarted from midfield.

After saving a try down the other end, Sewell very nearly set up St Michael’s first soon after. His deft feet at the line broke through a gap and, faced only with the Marymount fullback Ky Veech, he stumbled and was forced to offload – Jenkins pouncing on the loose ball for Marymount to deny the would-be try.

Play resumed in reverse and Marymount’s lead was extended through Ryder Damro – the centre crashing over in the right corner off the back of a bustling run from bench middle forward Oscar Laffranchi.

Returning for the second half with a 16-0 lead, Marymount left-centre Joshua Trowbridge decided he wanted in on the action with a dashing run down the sideline, breaking multiple tackles to cross for another try inside the opening minute of play.

From the kick-off, prop Cooper Bai – son of former Gold Coast Chargers and Melbourne Storm winger Marcus Bai – charged through the St Michael’s line and made it beyond halfway before being taken down. Two plays later, hooker Smith was over for a double.

St Michael’s woes got even worse when the short kick-off attempt didn’t make the required distance and Marymount, armed with a full set and prime field position, made them pay once again.

This time halfback Sewell went from provider to scorer – receiving from his right-centre and, after a dance step around the tiring defence, dashed through the gap to dive under the posts and extend the lead beyond 30 points.

Down but not out, St Michael’s decided enough was enough and forced a trio of errors out of Marymount in the ensuing sets. Unfortunately the boys in red and white struggled to get anything going of their own in attack.

With the sting all but gone from the game, Laffranchi got a much-deserved reward for his dominant performance when he crashed over left of the posts.

With time counting down St Michael’s looked to have finally broken through in the right corner – instead the pass was ruled forward and their final chance at reward for effort went begging.

The final siren sounded moments later.

For St Michael’s, prop Izac Ticehurst and back-rower Lachlan Jones were tireless in both attack and defence, while five-eight Xavier Cashman was the chief creator in attack.

But the afternoon belonged to Marymount, spearheaded by explosive forwards Kyden Ring and Oscar Laffranchi and steered around the park well by rake Hadley Smith and the quality kicking game of halves duo Jimi Pedlow and Charlie Sewell.

MABEL PARK SHS v KEEBRA PARK SHS

YEAR 7-8 girls

The Keebra Park SHS bounced back from a first-round loss to wrestle past Mabel Park SHS this afternoon at Burleigh Heads.

A late converted try by Mabel Park reduced the margin to 12-10 in a tremendous clash between two evenly matched teams.

It was Keebra’s defence which was outstanding, providing the backbone for the win.

Keebra Park SHS’s Ruby Te Amo led by example against a big forward pack, crashing the ball forward on numerous occasions during driving right side running.

Off the back of one of her charges, Keebra Park second row partner Seneisha Hepi was able to crash over from dummy half.

Both teams defended strongly, with a one-on-one tackle by Keebra’s Tahiah Anderson on her opposite Manaia Kahatea a great ball and all effort, while driving Keebra defence by Tupai and Dorlet put their opponent over the sideline.

Keebra was also able to defend their tryline, and the team’s reward for that effort was watching interchange forward Charlize Lewis crash over at the other end of the field to create a 8-nil advantage.

Mabel Park SHS interchange forward Latai Vili must surely have given her team confidence with his driving runs, while fullback Tiahna Kanaawi was dangerous floating up in the front line in attack.

It came as little surprise that Kanawi impacted the play with a startling solo effort from 15m out to reduce Keebra’s advantage to 8-4.

A great ball-and-all goal-line tackle by Mabel Park SHS prop Rangimaria Hurae-Poi highlighted Mabel’s determination to stay in the match, and Hurae-Poi was also eager to carry the ball forward.

But there was no catching Keerba Park centre Tahliah Anderson when she pinned her eyes back and set sail for the left hand corner, with her effort rising the home side to a 12-4 break

Then came Mabel’s second try scored by Eden Tutakangahau with the full-time whistle looming.

MARSDEN SHS v MARYMOUNT COLLEGE

YEAR 9-10

Marsden SHS powered to victory with a comprehensive power game leading to their 60-6 win.

Marsden were too big and strong against rivals who never stopped trying, but who simply could not constrain Marsden sustained periods.

Behind a dominant pack, the running games of fullback Mercedes Taulelei-siala and five-eight India Seeto proved too hot to handle.

There was a moment of triumph for Marymount late in the game when Chanel Davis scored to get her side on the board, a richly deserved try.

But Marsden were so good from the start, and had a dream opening when Kayleen Taki burst over after her Taulelei-siala had gone within the brink of scoring following a slicing run.

Some early unloads by Kayleen Taki and Rina Francis put Marymount on the back foot, enabling Seeto to push forward with a powerful run to the tryline.

Marymount’s Kiara Bikeris took on the Marsden pack on several occasions with some inspiring runs, and once her tackle forced a turnover.

She then took the next ruck and unloaded, giving Marymount a chance to challenge the Marsden defence.

Then came the a thrilling solo try by Marsden’s Taulelei-siala who strode onto the ball midfield, before angling her run toward the line.

There was a tremendous on goal tackle by Marymount’s Hayley Sheather to stop a try, and her effort typified Marymount’s endeavour.

Marymount may not have always been successful in bringing their bigger opponents down, but they tried hard and always put their bodies in front of their rivals.

”I could not be prouder,’’ said Marymount coach Tegan Crawford. “They played their hearts out for a team that has just started.’’

But there was no stopping Marsden, and prop Francis who kept her legs pumping all the way to the tryline.

Sheather made a grand covering tackle on a runaway opponent to highlight her team’s desperation, but when Marsden got up a head of steam, there was no stopping them, as was the case when Bronte Willis scored for Marsden.

MARSDEN SHS v MARYMOUNT COLLEGE

Open girls

Marsden SHS made it two from two in the open competition, with tonight’s 36-nil win over Marymount highlighting the team’s attacking potency.

The Marsden open team’s late match started to plan with a lovely right centre try to Ana Drotini and a burrowing, close to the line surge from dummy half Oshanis Whakatau.

But the blue defensive wall of Marymount still showed up, hitting in numbers to try and counter Marsden’s impressive up tempo play.

What was evident was the organisational and passing skills of Marsden halfback Sienna Lofipo who brought runners onto the ball either side of her, while on her left five-eight Charmayne Pakura was a perfect link to attack further wide of the ruck.

Indeed one of the highlights of the match was when Pakura took the ball to the line, passed to Dilyza Leugaimafa, then backed up on the inside when Leugaimafa got her hands free to release the pass to the trailing Pakura who scored.

It was from a left side raid that winger Angelina Harrison scored after her forwards, one after the other, had gone forward with purpose and delivered quick play-the-balls to the dummy half.

Marymount had no fear carrying the ball toward the maroon and black Marsden defensive wall and will be a better team for the experience.

Marymount also lacked nothing in the effort department – they just came up against a much better side that will push hard for the premiership.
