FAB FIVE OF THE LANGER CUP

“With the inclusive nature of our competition it is only natural that we’ve also seen the very best come through to achieve their goals of playing the NRL,’’ Dyer said.

“Recent success stories include Tesi Niu from Marsden SHS, Payne Hass and David Fafita from Keebra Park SHS, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow from Kirwan SHS and Tom Deardon from Palm Beach Currumbin SHS – all excellent representatives of their families, their school and their community.

MATCH REPORT

A youthful Wavell SHS skimmed under the radar to inflict a surprise 38-24 victory over Keebra Park SHS on their own turf in round 1 of the Langer Cup tonight.

With the sea air delivering the freshest of breezes off the ocean, it was the boys from the big smoke, the rookie Wavell outfit, who delivered a telling hit and run victory.

A three try surge midway through the second half gave Wavell the luxury of a 32-10 and the whiff of victory.

Keebra Park finished with a rush to score three tries, but the damage was done by a Wavell side featuring 14 players on debut.

The powerhouse Wavell SHS Tahrell Feaveai, slick centre Prinston Esera and dashing fullback Corey Thomas scored three tries back-to-back-to-back and remarkably the contest seemed decided some way from home.

You could almost sense Wavell’s enthusiasm from go to woe, and the more success they had, the greater their confidence levels.

“It is something we spent a long time with in the pre-season,’’ said Wavell coach Jim Francis.

“That combination with our spin and having them in the picture at every play and combining where they can is something I am pretty happy with tonight.’’

Spritely footwork and passing by halves Isiah Iongi and Jalen Afamasaga and dummy half Josh Pese sparked their side, and around them team mates ran great angles.

Centre Esera was a go to man out wide and Tahrell Feaveai a powerhouse around the ruck, but it was a team effort, No.1 to No.19, and this young Wavell side will draw greater confidence from the win on the road.

Keebra Park coach Glen Campbell reflected: “We lost the momentum of the game and had trouble wrestling it back.We scored some slick tries and I said to them this morning they had plenty of tries in them, but defence is the thing they have to work on.’’

Early in the game, a scintillating solo try by Wavell SHS fullback Corey Thomas highlighted the opening half of Langer Cup.

Thomas cut Keebra Park SHS’s defence to ribbons with a blistering counter-attacking solo try from 70m.

There seemed nothing on when Thomas swooped onto the ball, but with a wave of his hips and a click of his heels he was off and running, swerving past a jagged defensive line and sprinting into the clear for all he was worth.

Thomas’ try and Kallum Stacey’s subsequent conversion gave Wavell a 18-10 lead late in the first half.

Wavell had earlier had the dream start when Queensland under 15 representative centre Prinston Esera slid over in the left hand corner after a shift to the fringes just minutes into the contest.

Wavell had been gifted possession courtesy of a handling error in the first set of the game by Keebra, and then an off-side penalty.Kallum Stacey’s sideline conversion of Esera’s try then nudgedd Wavell ahead 6-0.

But the Keebra response was quick and decisive.

Down by six, Keebra found themselves in front within the blink of an eye courtesy of five-eighth Dave Telea.

After probing all aspects of the Wavell defensive line, Telea launched a long, long cut out pass to his right which lobbed in the hands of Klese Haas.

With the Wavell defence stretched, Haas was able to put winger Trey Peni into a one-on-one situation which he handled effortlessly to score outside.

Almost from the kick off Telea cracked the defensive line again, this time with a damaging run.

With the defence ruptured, Keebra seized the moment with big prop Herman Tofaeono thundering over next to the posts.

But while Keebra were in the groove in attack, they were not so urgent without the ball and Wavell took advantage to score next courtesy of  Esera’s state team mate, No.13 Tahrell Feoveai, who powered over from close range.

Then came Thomas’s try and Wavell were in front.
