Josie Wogand has revealed her NRLW dream after establishing herself as one of Queensland’s top teen footy talents still on the market.
The hooker wrapped up a brilliant campaign at the annual Confraternity Carnival in Rockhampton on Thursday, helping orchestrate The Cathedral College’s grand final win before collecting a host of individual accolades.
She scored two tries, her team’s first and last, in a Player of the Final performance in a 26-16 win over carnival newcomers St James College.
The 17-year-old went on to be awarded Player of the Carnival, TCC’s Best and Fairest and was named in the Confraternity honorary team, alongside her TCC teammates Kayla Vella, Rachel Oakley, skipper Manaia Faiumu-Malone, Charlotte McLean and Ellie Goodwin.
Wogand made her debut with the CQ Capras women’s team in the BMD Premiership this year but, incredibly, is yet to be signed by an NRLW club.
But that’s where she has set her sights, expressing a desire to join the North Queensland Cowboys.
With a likely move to Townsville to attend university next year, Wogand is hoping to join the Blackhawks who are slated to enter the BMD next season.
“I hope I can just keep the pathways up and maybe get picked up by the Cowboys. That’s the dream, so fingers crossed,” she said.
The grand final win was a special one for TCC, which is the host school for this year’s record-breaking edition of Confraternity.
It was the second time they lifted the prized shield in three straight grand final appearances.
Wogand said the incredible win was the result of the players’ camaraderie and buy-in to coach Damon Moore’s message.
“After our loss last year, especially us older girls, we were keen for redemption,” she said.
“To do it at home - we were wishing for it and we got it so it’s amazing.”
But they had to fight for it against St James College, which was making its first appearance at the carnival.
TCC were off to the perfect start when Wogand burrowed over for her first and barnstorming front rower Rachel Oakley proved unstoppable close to the line to give them a 10-nil lead.
St James responded with a double strike from lock Kina Vainga and second rower Chloe Barnsdale to snatch a 12-10 lead at the break.
A second try to superstar Vainga early in the second half got them out to 16-10 before TCC rallied, buoyed by a vocal home crowd.
Centre Heidi Silvester sent winger Millie Price streaking away on the right edge to level things up before crossing for a try of her own three minutes later to put TCC back in front.
Fittingly, it was Wogand who sealed the deal with her second try four minutes before the final hooter.
The champion number nine said it was great to come out on top in what was a physical contest.
She praised TCC’s middle forwards who matched up well against St James’s powerful pack.
She said to receive so many individual accolades was “incredible”, particularly in her final year with the school, but was quick to acknowledge her teammates.
“All the other girls set the platform for me to do my thing so I couldn’t have done it without them,” she said.
