A dramatic twist in Tuesday afternoon’s playoffs has spelt the end of Ignatius Park’s Confraternity Shield defence.

The Townsville powerhouse played out a 10-all draw with St Patrick’s Mackay on Tuesday but under carnival rules, drawn quarter-finals are decided by the first scoring play.

That came from St Patrick’s halfback Adam McSherry, who produced some individual brilliance to score a try in the 12th minute of the riveting contest at Rockhampton’s Kettle Park.

St Patrick’s coach Scott Mau said his team played well at the right time after taking the opening three matches to settle into rhythm.

“We’ve been building into this and that game was spot-on,” he said.

Adam McSherry’s four-pointer ultimately decided the quarter final against Ignatius Park.

“Ignatius Park are a very good team and we knew they would be physical.

“Our players stepped up and worked really hard.”

The girls’ reigning champions were also eliminated, with St Pat’s Mackay beaten by carnival newcomers St James College, who will now meet The Cathedral College in Thursday’s grand final.

Footy fans have been treated to two days of brilliant footy as a record 56 boys’ teams and 16 girls’ teams from Catholic and Independent schools contest the carnival, run by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League.

TCC is the host school for the annual event and had another reason to celebrate when their boys advanced to the semis with a come-from-behind win against St Augustine’s.

Buoyed by the home crowd, star winger Terrick Law sealed the 15-10 result with a last-gasp try to set up a showdown against St Pat’s.

St Brendan’s continued their impressive form with a 12-nil win over Shalom College.

The Scott Minto-coached outfit has conceded just one try in its four matches.

They will look to continue their brilliant defensive effort against Padua on Thursday after the Brisbane team ran in four tries to two in its 22-12 win over Iona.
