HARRIET Brown has had the remainder of her surf lifesaving season ripped from beneath her feet.

Having trained up to 16 times a week for the past two months in anticipation of the Queensland and Australian surf lifesaving titles, the former Nutri-Grain series champion arrived at swimming training on Friday, business as usual.

“That’s the first time we thought it might be a possibility,” Brown said.

Just hours later, both events were cancelled by their respective organising bodies amid COVID-19 fears as the surf lifesaving season came to an abrupt end.

“My sister had come up (from Victoria) for the weekend so I was out for dinner with her when we found out,” Brown said.

“We found out when surf lifesaving put the news up on Facebook.

“There was a bit of a discussion beforehand but once States were cancelled, we were basically waiting for them to make the call on Aussies.

“All of us Northcliffe girls are in a group message and we were all in absolute shock and couldn’t believe it came to an end so quickly.”

The 29-year-old admitted her and her clubmates had been left “devastated” by the abrupt end to their summer but they all understood the reality of the evolving global pandemic.

“With six weeks to go until Aussies, so much of our focus and our weekly lives were revolved around Aussies.

“It’s really tough but with what’s going on in the world, we can’t be too disappointed.

“There’s a bigger picture going on in the world right now and there have been so many more sporting events affected so we’ve got to put it in perspective in the scheme of things.”

Despite having nothing to train for, Brown was still fully prepared to attend training on Saturday morning before Northcliffe pulled the pin on Friday night.

“I had my bag packed with my swimmers in there and protein shake ready to go so I was all set and knew what the session was,” she said.

“It was really strange because I slept in instead and went for a swim at the beach for fun.

“We’re taking it one day at a time.

“I assume we’ll take a break now.”

Brown was also planning to ramp up training in anticipation of the Surf Lifesaving World Championships which were set to be held in Riccione, Italy in September.

The world ironwoman champion is now set to enjoy a prolonged break as they wait for further information.

“I’m on my way to climb Mount Warning because I’ve lived on the Gold Coast for 10 years and never climbed it,” Brown said on Sunday.

“It will be nice to relax for a bit as weekends are usually very busy.”
