Matt Hoysted looking for more luck with Appin Girl in the Goldmarket at Gold Coast

Trainer Matt Hoysted is confident Appin Girl can atone in Friday night’s Goldmarket at the Gold Coast after her luckless last-placed finish.

Is there no future in futures? Best bred horse in Australia to stay unbeaten?

With a bit of luck trainer Matt Hoysted believes exciting sprinter Appin Girl will make her presence felt in Friday night’s Listed Goldmarket (1100m) at the Gold Coast.

The Eagle Farm-based conditioner admits he was frustrated with the way it panned out in the Magic Millions Nudgee Stakes when Appin Girl never got a clear shot at her rivals but hopes she can atone with a win in Friday’s feature event.

“It was frustrating last start when she had no luck at all but she’s got a good gate on Friday and maps to get a good run in transit,” Hoysted said.

“If she can get the breaks at the right time, I feel she can make her presence felt there.

“She’s just going to need luck at the right time but she’s got an explosive turn of foot and that can get her out of danger.”

The Gold Coast track can prove a tricky circuit for a horse with Appin Girl’s racing pattern but Hoysted is confident it’s a track that she can really shine around.

And while all her best performances are on spacious tracks like Eagle Farm and Flemington, Hoysted said all she requires is luck to be right in the mix.

“The track should really suit her because she can be cuddled up and saved for one crack at them,” Hoysted said.

“She’s really dynamic when it’s like that but as I said, she just needs luck for it to happen.”

A storm around the Gold Coast on Thursday has the track in the soft range and while expecting Appin Girl to handle it, Hoysted admits she’s much more effective on a dry track.

“Obviously she is definitely better on top of the ground,” Hoysted said.

“Hopefully the track can improve so we’ve got a fair surface there,” he said.

Bookies rate Appin Girl as the second pick in betting as a $5.50 chance with Tony Gollan’s galloper Golden Boom the $3.40 favourite.

Gollan has five runners in the race and a win would give him his sixth Goldmarket since 2015 years after winning previously with Garibaldi (2022), Baller (2021), Snitch (2020), Raido (2018) and Gundy Son (2015).
