HE didn’t win a race at Aquis Park last premiership season but little-known jockey Allan Chau has cheekily declared that he wants to dethrone the King of the Coast.
While Dan Griffin is known to reign over the Gold Coast track thanks to his nine premierships, rival hoop Ryan Plumb currently sits six wins clear (20) in the standings.
Yet it’s the unassuming Chau (equal third with 12 wins) who has set his sights on scalping the king and claiming the Gold Coast premiership throne.

His audacious bid gathered momentum when he rode a winning treble for trainer Michael Costa at Aquis Park last Saturday.

“I’ll have a crack at it,” the 32-year-old said with a smile.
“I wouldn’t mind having a crack at winning a premiership on the Gold Coast and giving King Griffin a run for his money.
“We all joke around (as jockeys) and we’re all mates out there but we’re trying to do the same thing.
“And it’s always good to have a bit of rivalry and he’s helped me a lot along the way.
“My goal would be to have a crack at that but that Griffin is tough to catch, isn’t he?.”
The ambitions don’t stop there for a jockey who contemplated giving the sport away in 2013 after breaking his neck in a race fall at Grafton.

“Every jockey will say there’d love to ride in a big race like a Group 1,” Chau said.
“But there’s a dream and then there’s reality.
“Having a crack at the bigger races down the track would be nice.
“But hopefully this time next year we’ll be talking about me winning the Coast premiership.”
