A SECOND Magic Millions 2YO Classic win in four years could loom for the Edmonds Racing stable as The Drinks Cart leads a group of prospective early runners being prepared for a run at the $2 million Gold Coast race.

The Drinks Cart is currently the leading hope for the Gold Coast-based stable with the colt’s impressive win at the Gold Coast trials earlier this month backed up by a debut race in at the same track on Wednesday.

A little slowly away, The Drinks Cart settled off the speed, but when Ryan Maloney put him into clear air in the straight, he quickly gathered in Eagle Farm debut winner Kavak and raced away to win untouched in the 900m scamper.

Ladbrokes reported The Drinks Cart firmed from $41-$21 for the Magic Millions yesterday morning and in the wake of the win, trimmed up further to be a $10 chance.

He’s bred to win a Magic Millions. His ill-fated dad Unencumbered won the 2014 2YO Classic, while his mum Snipzu was Group 3 placed before running ninth to Driefontein in the 2012 MM.

Yet his purchase price does not match his pedigree.

Bred by Rick Jamieson’s Gilgai Farm (the birth place of Black Caviar), The Drinks Cart was knocked down for a meagre $2000 at this year’s MM National Yearling Sale in June.

Our Fiction (1993) is the cheapest winner of the 2YO Classic at $10,000.

SECRET TO ‘OLD FELLAS’ CAREER RESURGENCE

Maloney put The Drinks Cart at the top of his pecking order from a Magic Millions 2YO point of view.

“Two-year olds can be here one day and gone the next, but he’s the clear pick for me at this stage anyway,” he said.

“He couldn’t have been more impressive. Chris Munce’s horse (Kavak) had the race experience and looked pretty smart winning at Eagle Farm and my horse beat him very easily and I never got to the bottom of him.”

The two-year-old, owned by a group of Melbourne women, wasn’t completey tested in his trial and runner-up All Good Millo - trained by Michael Costa - went on to finish third at a metropolitan meeting at the Sunshine Coast.

“He trialled very well,” trainer Trent Edmonds said.

“Our guy had a lot left by the look of it and it was a great educational trial.

“It’s touch and go with these two-year-olds but he seems to be holding up good at the moment. He is nice and tough. He is probably our leading hope at this stage.”

The 2017 Magic Millions 2YO Classic win with Houtzen provided an enormous opportunity for training partners Toby and Trent Edmonds, with the father-son combination enjoying a major boost in clients and horses following the victory.

“Leading into the (2017) race we were up and coming and getting bigger and better stock,” Edmonds said.

“We had 35 horses in work but when she won the race our numbers doubled to 70 within three of four weeks. It was an explosion.

“It means a lot. It’s our home track and it’s basically grand final day. If we are lucky enough to ever win it again it would be massive.”

Edmonds is acutely aware of how rapidly things can change with young sprinters who are still growing and learning about racing.

It was only weeks ago that Wisdom Of Water was their leading Magic Millions hope but he suffered shin soreness after a fourth-place finish at Eagle Farm on November 2 and is looking set for a spell.

“We thought he was the number one seed. He is super sharp but he pulled up shine sore on the hard track,” Edmonds said.

“We will probably give him a spell and wait for the Aquis Jewell later in the season.”

Edmonds said the stable had six two-year-old’s who presented as chances at the 2YO Classic.

“A couple have had trials and within the next couple for weeks we will see a few more roll out,” Edmonds said.

“It’s around (six weeks) until (Magic Millions race day) and it’s all about timing. You can’t miss a beat.

“You have to have everything inch perfect and a bit of luck.”
