Tawfiq Boy has enjoyed success in Queensland for Kris Lees and Mel Eggleston

“IF you can keep the old fellas feeling good and happy then you can keep them at the top of their game.” That is the message of Kris Lees’ Gold Coast-based foreman Mel Eggleston who believes Tawfiq Boy is the gelding who “doesn’t know how to run a bad race”.

“IF you can keep the old fellas feeling good and happy then you can keep them at the top of their game.”

That is the message of Kris Lees’ Gold Coast-based foreman Mel Eggleston who believes Tawfiq Boy is the gelding who “doesn’t know how to run a bad race”.

The six-year-old will run in today’s Open Handicap (1400m) at Gold Coast where he will jump from barrier 5 and race for a second straight win following his success at Doomben over 1350m on November 13.

“He has a good chance,” Eggleston said.

“He had a win in Brisbane the other day and racing well, has drawn a good gate so I’m expecting him to finish well.”

Newcastle-based Lees first sent Tawfiq Boy to Queensland in August last year and his career has since blossomed with the gelding winning over $200,000 in prizemoney while celebrating five wins.

“He just likes it up here,” Eggleston said.

“We get him to the beach and do a lot of work with him there.

“He wasn’t going that well until he came up here and then hit his straps.

“They decided that if it wasn’t broken then they wouldn’t fix it.

“He is always bobbing up with a win. We keep him fresh and wanting to (race). He doesn’t know how to run a bad race. When you get them going like they start putting their hand up all the time, they are honest. That is what he is doing.”

Each spell Tawfiq Boy returns to the Wyong property owned by syndicators Australian Bloodstock before beginning work in Newcastle and then shifting to the Gold Coast operation once he is ready to race.

His current preparation has included seven runs, including two wins and a place, with Eggleston comfortable Tawfiq Boy still has more left.

“Every run he is showing no signs that he has had enough,” Eggleston said.

“At the moment the owners are happy with him and they are all having a bit of fun, he is picking up prizemoney so he is paying his way. If he can bob up now and again that is all you can ask.”
