TYRONE Roberts believes enjoyment could hold the key to the Titans’ 2020 fortunes and today he took another small step on that journey.
The 28-year-old half was joined by Gold Coast teammates Kallum Watkins and Alex Gerrard at a monthly Disabled Surfing Association session this morning, giving up his time to help DSA members have fun in the Currumbin surf.
After a horror NRL season in which the Titans won just four games en route to the wooden spoon, it could prove a seminal moment in the club’s quest for redemption next season.
‘IT’S PRETTY SPECIAL TO PLAY FOR THE GOLD COAST’
“It’s all about having fun here at the moment. There’s so many volunteers so there’s a lot of people out here to help a wonderful organisation,” Roberts, who assumed the Titans’ captaincy this year in the absence of Ryan James, said.
“This is their last day of the year before they break up so just thought I’d come down, show support and have a bit of fun. It’s a good day, a good day to spend at the beach.
“You see the smile on their faces and they love it. No matter how cold the water is, it cheers them up and makes us excited to do what we do.
“I think (the key for the Titans in 2020) is just about enjoying it, enjoying football again and having fun. When you’re having fun, you want to go out there and play football and represent your club and people in your community.
‘I DON’T KNOW HIS BEST POSITION’ - TITANS’ PEACHEY PROBLEM
“That’s what it’s all about. We’ll do that (next) year - we can’t think too far ahead but everyone is doing the right things at the moment and ripping in.”
Doing his bit for the Titans’ Community Foundation today, Roberts showed no signs of the Achilles injury that plagued his 2019 season.
The former Newcastle and Warrington playmaker made just 15 appearances this year but is now back at full fitness and hoping to rekindle his halves partnership with Ash Taylor next season.
“I’m back in full training so it’s all up and onwards for me now. I think everyone is excited,” he said.
HOLBROOK REVEALS LENIHAN’S HIDDEN TALENTS
“It’s good to start pre-season again. We’ve got a new coach (Justin Holbrook), new staff and everyone’s enjoying it.
“Everyone’s ripping in, we’re doing a lot of ball work to get everything down pat skill-wise. I just want to get back to playing football, get back enjoying it and having fun.”
