SuperCoach NRL: 20 Winners and Losers from Panthers vs Bulldogs, Eels vs Broncos

The big wet played its part in the west of Sydney as Penrith and Parramatta both hosted games played in torrential conditions at times.

Did it play into the hands of your SuperCoach team, or were your Friday night selections kept to a minimum?

One of the big talking points was how Reece Walsh would bounce back, and the Broncos star did so in a big way as the four fullbacks in action all scored well across the board.

The hottest topic of discussion was the injury to Nathan Cleary, a huge drawcard in SuperCoach and one of the most popular players in the game.

It appears as though he’ll be out for at least a few weeks, spelling trouble for almost 45,000 SuperCoaches.

See who the top performers were from the night in our SuperCoach Winners and Losers:

SUPERCOACH WINNERS

1. Blaize Talagi (94 pts) – Great night for the young gun in his first game at fullback, posting the second highest score of the night at under $280k.

2. Luke Garner (91 pts) – After cracking the ton against Souths, Garner scored again and posted another massive score.

3. Dylan Brown (89 pts) – Is at a bargain price now and will be a popular buy, particularly with halves partner Mitch Moses set to return.

4. Dylan Edwards (95 pts) – Mr Consistency at the moment. Edwards gets the job done week in, week out and is a reliable purchase.

5. Reece Walsh (87 pts) – After a poor showing against the Roosters, the classy Walsh hit back in great fashion to post a great score.

6. Jacob Kiraz (88 pts) – Added a huge boost to his score in the very last seconds, but was among the top CTW in the fixture prior to his try.

7. Matt Burton (81 pts) – Fell one point short of his breakeven, but his consistency from round four onwards has been incredible.

8. Brian To’o (84 pts) – Dropped to his lowest price of the year and produced his second highest score of 2024 with a try to boost his tally.

9. Bailey Simonsson (67 pts) – There’s plenty of good CTW options out there, but with two solid scores in consecutive weeks, could shape as a nice budget buy.

10. Connor Tracey (55 pts) – Got the nod over Blake Taaffe to wear the fullback jersey and produced a solid SuperCoach output in tough conditions for backs.

SUPERCOACH LOSERS

1. Nathan Cleary (33 pts) – One of the most popular players in the game now faces another stint on the sidelines after his hamstring injury.

2. Billy Walters (3 pts) – Came off inside the opening 20 minutes with a wrist injury. Will wait and see how severe it is.

3. Brendan Piakura (17 pts) – Played 52 minutes but didn’t have much of an impact to let his owners down.

4. Liam Martin (27 pts) – Didn’t really fire in the SC stakes tonight to continue a pretty tough year for his owners.

5. Brendan Hands (12 pts) – Brad Arthur has opted away from the one hooker, and with just 19 minutes of action it was tough for Hands to get into the game.

6. Joey Lussick (32 pts) – See above. He looms as a pretty obvious sell for SuperCoaches who want to run with two gun hookers.

7. Jaeman Salmon (28 pts) – Started the season as a good cheapie option but might be time to upgrade. Still yet to break 50 points.

8. Maika Sivo (29 pts) – Had a few nice touches but ultimately wasn’t able to assert any dominance on the contest.

9. Viliame Kikau (33 pts) – Conditions didn’t really favour the big man and Penrith’s defence was up in his face all night.

10. Bronson Xerri (30 pts) – After three strong scores, came crashing back with a 30 in an unsuitable game.

EELS VS BRONCOS

FULL-TIME - Broncos 30-14

It was Brisbane at its best during key stages of the second half and that proved the difference as they come away with a decisive win over Parramatta.

The margin was just four early in the second half but the Eels lacked the firepower to land a blow, and the Broncos made them pay.

70th minute - Broncos 30-14

Payne Haas has had a monster of a second half for the Broncos and it’s a good sign for Blues fans.

Despite a SC score of just 47, he’s been enormous tonight with some key offloads that have helped Brisbane put the Eels to the sword.

After a great start to the second half from Parramatta, it’s been all Brisbane and they look set to win this comfortably.

60th minute - Broncos 30-14

How did Selwyn Cobbo do that?!

Incredible play from the Broncos centre, who gets on the end of a grubber with the ball almost over the dead-ball line, before bending down to ground it just centimetres before the line.

That is extraordinary and gives Reece Walsh a try assist and 80 SuperCoach points for the night.

Billy Walters has been ruled out for the remainder of the game.

55th minute - Broncos 24-14

Ezra Mam you star.

The rain is bucketing down at CommBank Stadium, and after a nice break on the back of a Payne Haas offload, the five-eighth chips and chases with Blaize Talagi in the line and scores to push the lead back out to 10.

That was such a nice piece of play and the Broncos needed that with the Eels starting to build momentum.

45th minute - Broncos 18-14

What a crazy start to the half.

After the Broncos take the kick, Dylan Brown rips the ball out of Deine Mariner’s hands just metres from the line to score the easiest of tries.

Just like that the Eels are right back in the contest.

HALFTIME - Broncos 18-8

After a tough start in his first NRL game at the back, Blaize Talagi hits back by stepping past Ezra Mam to score Parramatta’s first try of the night late in the first half.

They needed something to show for their dominance of territory and possession in the opening stanza and he delivered.

Just as it looked like the Eels would take a narrow deficit into the break, Deine Mariner races away for his second try after Jordan Riki pounces on a Shaun Lane error to make them pay just before halftime.

It’s a cruel blow for the Eels, who have had 59% of the ball and lead the penalties/set restarts 5-1.

30th minute - Broncos 12-2

Parramatta looked destined to score their first try of the night as Bailey Simonsson made a break, but his pass inside was dropped by Dylan Brown with Reece Walsh handling things well at the back.

Brisbane make them pay soon after with the speed and footwork of Deine Mariner coming to the fore after a simple backline movement draws Maika Sivo in and the Broncos winger burns them.

20th minute - Broncos 6-2

Billy Walters has come from the field with a wrist injury and Tyson Smoothy comes onto the field.

Blaize Talagi slips over when trying to catch a Josh Rogers bomb and Selwyn Cobbo scores, only for the Bunker to take it away for Brendan Piakura to be ruled offside in the chase.

A dropped ball 10m out from Brisbane’s line by Parramatta is picked up by Ezra Mam on the run, who hands it off to Reece Walsh to complete the length of the field try.

10th minute - Eels 2-0

Billy Walters came reeling out of a tackle in the opening minutes and had the trainer look over him, but continues to play on.

Selwyn Cobbo spilt his lollies in his own half and the Broncos were forced to defend their line for a number of sets, but they managed to hold steady.

Parramatta has had all the ball and looked to have finally cracked them, but Bailey Simonsson dropped the ball over the line.

They get out of jail with an offside call and Sean Russell converts the easily penalty shot.

7.55PM: The Eels have one change ahead of their must-win clash with the Broncos at CommBank Stadium.

Brendan Hands comes onto the bench in place of Bryce Cartwright who hasn’t been cleared to make his return from injury.

The standard Junior Paulo to bench and Joe Ofahengaue starting move again takes place.

Brisbane is 1-17 with Josh Rogers set to make his debut at halfback in place of the injured Adam Reynolds.

Fan favourite Corey Oates returns to the wing with Jesse Arthars out.

PANTHERS VS BULLDOGS

FULL-TIME - Panthers 16-10

Penalties continued to hammer the Bulldogs and another penalty goal to Dylan Edwards made the task just a little too tough.

Jacob Kiraz scores with just seconds on the clock, but it is far too late.

Canterbury can take some solace in the fact they held Penrith out in the second half, conceding just the two penalty goals, but they didn’t really look like winning at any stage.

The main talking point is of course the injury of Nathan Cleary who went down with a hamstring complaint just before the break.

Here are the top SuperCoach scores from the match:

70th minute - Panthers 14-4

The ball has turned into a cake of soap at Penrith.

Despite dropping plenty of it in their own half, the Bulldogs are finally on the board with ex-Panther Matt Burton shrugging off ex-Bulldog Paul Alamoti with ease to score close to the sideline.

They’re right back in this contest and with 10 minutes to play there’s enough time to complete the comeback.

60th minute - Panthers 14-0

Just as the Bulldogs looked to be over for their first points of the night, the touch judge correctly spots a forward pass from Bronson Xerri to Josh Addo-Carr, denying the Foxx a four pointer.

Despite the scoreline they are still throwing some punches at the Panthers and you’d be crazy to write them off just yet.

Luke Garner is up to 83 SuperCoach points with Dylan Edwards on his way to another big score with 77.

50th minute - Panthers 14-0

Matt Burton appeared to clutch at a sternum after an attempted tackle.

But the big news is Nathan Cleary re-injuring the hamstring that has kept him out for a large chunk of the season to date.

It’s horror news for Blues fans with Origin just around the corner.

A penalty goal from Dylan Edwards extends the lead beyond two converted tries.

HALFTIME - Panthers 12-0

The slippery surface has caught the Bulldogs out with the loose ball, with things opening up for Penrith and Brian To’o the beneficiary of the bouncing ball to score Penrith’s second of the night just before the break.

In shattering signs for Panthers, Blues and SuperCoaches, Nathan Cleary has walked up the tunnel after the try and the assumption is that his hamstring has gave way.

It’s fair to say the conditions have dictated how this game has played out.

For the neutral it certainly hasn’t set the world on fire.

For fans of both sides, they’ll be anxiously watching this second half knowing the game is right in the balance.

It’s a shame that Sydney’s weather hasn’t been able to subside, with neither side able to play too expansive.

Luke Garner provided the highlight for the home side with a tough try.

30th minute - Panthers 6-0

Take a bow Luke Garner.

He’s busted through about four tacklers to finally get the scoring underway for the Panthers.

Their defence has been solid tonight the Bulldogs, but that was pretty ordinary, and Nathan Cleary converts.

Jacob Kiraz has 38 SC points with Max King, Matt Burton and James Fisher-Harris all on 30.

20th minute - 0-all

Jacob Kiraz went down with what appears to be a knee injury.

It came on the back of a Nathan Cleary tackle as he pulled him down from behind, but there is no call of a hip drop, and correctly so.

Jaeman Salmon then can’t get out of the way of a Cleary dropout and the Panthers have their best chance of the half.

They can’t make them pay and we remain with no score.

10th minute - 0-all

Neither side has been able to break through early on as the conditions prove testing for Penrith and Canterbury.

The ball handling of the Panthers has allowed the Bulldogs to have the best of the early opportunities on the back of some uncharacteristic errors.

Still, their defence has kept them at bay.

6PM: We are underway at Penrith!

Who have you got winning, the Panthers or Bulldogs?

5.30PM: Can the Bulldogs continue their extraordinary run?

They’ve won four of their last six and their two defeats have come by just two and four points against the Storm and Rabbitohs respectively.

Taking on the Panthers at the foot of the mountain is a tall order though.

Penrith takes a three-match win streak into this contest and are unbeaten at home so far in 2024.

Who are you rolling with in your SuperCoach side for this clash?

5PM: Connor Tracey is a late inclusion for the Bulldogs as they shake up their spine for a crunch clash with Penrith.

Blake Taaffe held the role last week in their win over the Wests Tigers, but has been relegated to 18th man.

Josh Curran starts on the bench with Samuel Hughes promoted to starting front rower.

The Panthers are 1-17 from their side named on Tuesday, with Nathan Cleary making his return after being rested against the lowly Rabbitohs.

KING CLEARY RETURNS, WALSH HUNTS REDEMPTION

There are some big names in action on tonight, with the headline act being the return of Penrith’s champion halfback Nathan Cleary ($859,800), with his 29% ownership hoping for a vintage performance against the Bulldogs.

Josh Curran ($564,800) continues to deliver some decent scores with a 63 point haul to his name last week.

Taylan May ($419,900) was another who had his owners beaming in round nine, grabbing his best score of the season with a big 74.

In the second game Parramatta return to action after their bye and face off against the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.

Young gun Blaize Talagi ($279,100), who has secured the No. 1 jersey for the Eels while skipper Clint Gutherson is sidelined after a knee surgery, is a strong watch. Owned by 23.6% of players, there’s serious potential for value there.

Dylan Brown ($646,900) is averaging 70 points per game in his last three and is poised for dual-position status in a few weeks which adds to his appeal.

For the Broncos, they’ll be without popular cheapie Jesse Arthars ($384,700) after he suffered a broken jaw in the big loss to the Roosters, while Adam Reynolds ($605,500) is out for an extended period with a ruptured biceps.

There’s still plenty of big guns kicking about though, with 27.5% of SuperCoaches hoping to see a Reece Walsh ($675,200) masterclass after his poor 51 points in round nine.
