North Queensland could be without star forward Jason Taumalolo for up to two weeks after the imposing Tongan picked up a calf complaint.
The Cowboys have ruled Taumalolo out of Saturday’s clash with Penrith, promoting Coen Hess to the starting side and bringing Kai O’Donnell onto the interchange.
Coach Todd Paytem confirmed the change on Friday morning.
“We’ve had to make one change. Jase (Taumalolo) has got a calf complaint, so he won’t play this week, possibly won’t play next week,” Payten said.
“It’s disappointing for Jase, disappointing for the club, but knowing how he heals he could be a chance to play next week, so we’re just doing the right thing by him.”
HORSBURGH RULED OUT OF DOGS CLASH
In-form Raiders prop Corey Horsburgh has been ruled out of Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash with Canterbury but is set to be cleared for a Queensland Origin recall.
In a blow for the Raiders and 98,000 SuperCoaches, Horsburgh will not be allowed to take the field at GIO Stadium this weekend due to the NRL’s concussion protocols.
The enforcer copped a head knock in the dying stages of Canberra’s golden point Magic Round win over Melbourne at Suncorp Stadium last Sunday.
While Horsburgh has recovered well from the incident, he appeared to visually exhibit some signs of being dazed and will not be allowed to play under the mandatory 11-day stand down rules.
His absence will be a blow for the second-placed Raiders searching for a sixth straight win against competition leaders Canterbury.
Horsburgh is expected to return for Canberra’s round 11 clash with the Titans, which will be his final audition for a Maroons recall in Game One of the Origin series.
Horsburgh made his Origin debut in the last game of the 2023 series, but did not feature at all in 2024.
He has started the season on fire for the Raiders and is right in the mix for a Maroons jersey at Suncorp Stadium on May 28.
