KFC SuperCoach NRL Cheapie Bible: Ramsey looks ripe for the picking
He’s not Trent Copeland’s Cheapie Of The Week but injury has opened the door for this cheapie and his draw looks kind too!
SuperCoach
Don't miss out on the headlines from SuperCoach. Followed categories will be added to My News.
Magic Round, eh.
Sin bins and send offs, Cleary breaking records, but the headline in a Cheapie Bible sense was … Turns out it wasn’t worth the Gamble.
Many KFC SuperCoaches’ cheapie of the week Tyson Gamble flopped in a big way, but thankfully Cheapie Bible favourites Nicho Hynes, Jason Saab and Charlie Staines delivered monster scores, Phoenix Crossland scored nicely yet again and Tom Flegler came through as my Cheapie of the week.
By definition a ‘Cheapie’ will be referenced when under $300,000 and actually relevant for KFC SuperCoach purposes. Key word being relevant. Once players eclipse the $300k mark they will be given a final verdict in the ‘Bon Voyage’ section.
Buckle up, here we go!

REECE WALSH FLB (WARRIORS) $303,600 – 100 POINTS
This guy is a FREAK. What a shame he’s only owned by 6% of teams, and likely slips out of range price wise for next year with the fullback jersey at the Warriors all to himself. 100 points off the bench, YES in just 45 minutes and that included just the one try, with an insanely good 16 points in tackle busts, a forced drop out, THREE line breaks, a line break assist and 16 points in runs. Unreal. With a BE of -31 and matchups the next two weeks against the Tigers and Cowboys before the bye, those of you who did jump on have some nice cash injections coming, even if it is in 25-40 minutes off the bench.
Verdict: HOLD – What a player. The Warriors have a wonderkid right here.
TOM FLEGLER FRF (BRONCOS) $303,400 – 45 POINTS
No one was talking about Flegler last week, with 99% of teams taking a Gamble, but the Cheapie Bible buy of the week most importantly saw a massive 51 minutes of game time. Huge. What eventuated was a slightly disappointing (for his standards) output of 45 points at 0.9PPM, but as predicted the minutes, role, and round 13 upside are absolutely there. It’s flat out criminal that Flegler’s only 2% owned right now, let’s change that this week, KFC SuperCoaches.
Verdict: BUY – Again, my cheapie of the week all things considered.
LACHLAN LAM 5/8 | HOK (ROOSTERS) $320,500 – 81 POINTS
Lam made a sensational return from injury just when the Roosters needed it most – and he looked in mid-season form. 81 points consisting of two try assists and two try contributions, 8 points in tackle busts, an offload, a forced drop out and 18 tackles. That is to be followed with a dream matchup against the Broncos this week, the struggling Raiders the week after and some very good matchups on the horizon including the Bulldogs in the big round 17 bye round.
Verdict: POD BUY – Flying very much under the radar due to the Roosters not covering round 13.
JAVID BOWEN CTW (COWBOYS) $186,800 – 68 POINTS
Bowen scored a 37 on season debut, and this past weekend scored 68 points including a try against the Roosters which is no mean feat. Most impressively, Bowen’s workrate has been brilliant thus far, and 10 points in tackle busts is a nice sign of having an impact. The downside is no round 13 coverage, along with some uncertainty on his place in the Cowboys’ best 17 once fully healthy, but in a season where CTW cheapies have been few and far between since the start of the season, Bowen may be your best downgrade option.
Verdict: LOW END BUY. Don’t love Bowen’s prospects, especially with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Justin O’Neill listed to return in the next two weeks.
PHOENIX CROSSLAND 5/8 (KNIGHTS) $268,100 – 72 POINTS
Yet again, Crossland was a standout for the Knights in a well beaten side against the Tigers. 72 points with two try assists, brought in an initial rise of $65,000 and maintaining a -37 BE. There are many unknowns when it comes to the prospect of jumping on board with Crossland, and it’s mainly to do with Blake Green lurking on an extended bench to return from injury this week. Late mail has Bradman Best out with a hammy, with Kurt Mann moving to centre and Green into halfback – which is a good sign for his prospects until Mitchell Pearce (pec, round 14-16) returns.
Verdict: RISKY BUY – I really like Crossland as a prospect, but given the scenario it’s a pass for me personally, mainly as I want guns only in the halves and fullback.
CODY RAMSEY CTW | FLB (DRAGONS) $252,200 – 33 POINTS
Here’s one for the speculators, the pod-hunters and I may even be talking myself into a Simonsson to Ramsey swap. Matt Dufty is out (AC joint, indefinite) and will be ‘assessed over the coming weeks for his return to play date’ meaning Ramsey slots in at fullback which has been an extremely profitable position for Dufty since settling in there. The concerns are clearly Ramsey’s lack of workrate (scoring 41 and 33 points the last two weeks respectively – with a try in both games).
Verdict: POD-BUY/WATCHLIST.
TYSON GAMBLE HFB | 5/8 (BRONCOS) $226,500 – 8 POINTS
That’s not a typo, Gamble scored 8 points. Sin Binned, EIGHT missed tackles, three penalties conceded. Honestly, it’s quite amazing and a sign of how bad the halves have been for the Broncos to this point this season that Gamble is still starting this week – alongside Albert Kelly would you believe! Despite the absolute shocker here, Gamble has had two solid games the two weeks prior, and if anything the 8 points gives non-owners a chance to take two weeks to look at him against the Roosters and Storm prior to round 13 coverage. Those that are already on board just need to cross their fingers there’s no more stinkers and Gamble doesn’t get dropped before round 13.
Verdict: HOLD/WATCH. BE of 20 this week, and likely 40+ next week means Gamble is a wait and watch.
MAX FEAGAI CTW (DRAGONS) $213,100 – 7 POINTS
Cody Ramsey’s late inclusion couldn’t have come at a worse time for Feagai owners, meaning the young winger started on the bench as the utility and scored a measly seven points in 36 minutes, stifling the money making before it had even started. But, The suspensions and injury carnage continues at the Dragons opening the door for Feagai to have another chance to get to round 13 for us. Ramsey’s move back to fullback to cover Matt Dufty (AC joint, indefinite), along with Ravalawa’s two week suspension are tricky timelines, but one thing we know is that Feagai won’t make too much cash the next two weeks regardless with a BE of 41 and the 7-point dud in his rolling average, so much like Gamble above, you can wait until round 13 to be sure.
Verdict: AVOID. For now, but given we know Ravalawa and Ramsey are the preferred wing combination I think it’s an avoid altogether.
POASA FAAMAUSILI FRF (DRAGONS) $226,900 – 22 POINTS
This is a left-field option to watch this coming weekend against the Sharks, and it comes through the absence of Josh McGuire (5 week suspension), Fuimaono (5-week suspension) and Tariq Sims (returns next week). Faamausili starts at lock, is available at near base price, covers the round 13 bye and if he sees 40-50 minutes much like Tom Flegler we could be on as a short-term purchase. Over his four-year NRL career he’s never really grabbed anything g more than a 25-30 minute role off the bench, so let’s wait and watch closely.
Verdict: WATCHLIST.
BON VOYAGE
JOSH CURRAN 2RF (WARRIORS) $389,800 – 64 POINTS
In an absolutely absurd late change by coach Nathan Brown (no shocks there, mind you!) Curran was benched an hour before kickoff, despite having been one of the Warriors’ best players since debuting in round six. That didn’t stop Curran, though, as he promptly pumped out 64 points including his second consecutive game with a try and 35 tackles (insane workrate). Unfortunately that’s where the good news stops as Curran hyperextended his elbow while making a tackle – it did look like a broken arm at one point – and is looking at 2-4 weeks on the sidelines. Ugh, he was on to eclipse the $450,000 barrier perfectly by round 13 too.
Verdict: SELL You could absolutely hold Curran through to round 17 coverage if you’re stacked for options, but it makes sense to move him on to a gun this week if you can muster the cash.
