“IT will be one of the best A-grade comps in years … if it does kick off.”

“IT will be one of the best A-grade comps in years … if it does kick off.”

Runaway Bay coach Nick Gleeson remains unconvinced the Rugby League Gold Coast season will get underway at all, but if it does he says expect a show.

With limited competitions across Australia due to the coronavirus, including the scrapping of Queensland’s state leagues, RLGC could become the home to waves of talent.

Intrust Super Cup clubs Burleigh and Tweed are open to sharing their players across the competition to ensure parity.

Yet with that – plus the relaxing of points cap rules – could come a battle of the chequebooks, one which Gleeson fears could deliver both talent but also lopsided contests.

“I know Souths-Logan aren’t that far from us too and some of their players have said they could come down,” Gleeson said.

“You could find that you could buy a competition this year if it came down to offering players from those (ISC) teams to play.”

The bigger question, though, is if the league starts again at all.

“Players might find they’ll have to be playing for less,” Gleeson said.

“For a lot of players, if it’s only going to be an eight or a 10-round comp, well is it worth getting injured?

“I wouldn’t be interested, to be honest (in getting ISC players).

“As soon as I start taking players from one club I upset players at my club.

“And then next season that player goes off to Currumbin, or wherever.

“But to be honest I can’t see us kicking off.

“It’s not like the players are on the Gold Coast and stay on the Gold Coast; they travel up to Cairns so while there may not be any cases here the guys could bring some back.

“I just think it’s going to be a gap year.

“We’re disappointed because we had a really good pre-season.”
