The bad news is that Origin back-rower David Fifita appears increasingly unlikely to sign the five-year, $5 million dollar contract offered by the Gold Coast Titans.
The good news is there’s still hope he’ll don the blue-and-gold in 2021.
The twists and turns of the Fifita saga have been relentless but the revelation his broken relationship with manager Steve Deacon is past the point of no return is a game-changer for the Titans.
Reports suggest Fifita is inclined to reject any big-money contract because his manager is legally obligated to a portion – between four and seven per cent - of any contract signed before December.
If Fifita wants to cut out the manager he’s not spoken to in over a year he’ll take a cheaper one-year-old deal and look for a life-changing contract from 2021.

Broncos players are receiving death threats from a septic fanbase who booed them off the field last time they played.
Rumours of unrest within the playing group abound and alarm bells are ringing around the future of coach Anthony Seibold.
What 20-year-old kid dreams of tethering himself to a dumpster fire like that?
All of a sudden, removing himself from that environment for the stability of Justin Holbrook and the Gold Coast Titans begins to sound more appealing.
Fifita knows the Gold Coast well and the Titans better, with former schoolmates Moeaki Fotuaika, Tanah Boyd, Ioane Seiuli and new recruit Tino Fa’asuamaleaui on the books for 2021.
Titans fans must prepare for the likelihood Fifita will reject the five-year megadeal Mal Meninga has put on the table.
But to escape Red Hill and the shackles of his manager, Fifita may just seek an escape to the Gold Coast for 2021.
If he likes it, he may never leave.
