Langer Cup’s season opener will be at 3.40pm when the Xavier Va’a-inspired St Mary’s College host 2020 giant killers Wavell SHS.
Wavell SHS have lost outstanding backrower Junior Taungatua through injury, but coach Mick Roberts said his squad was brimming with confidence after supplying 16 of the 19 Met North squad members who won last week’s QRSSSL championship.
“We know we have been training hard but you don’t know until you are on the park, and from those results they will take confidence out of that carnival into the competition,’’ Roberts said.
Va’a’s young brother, De La Salle, will join him in a Langer Trophy debut for St Mary’s.

PLAYERS TO WATCH IN SEASON 2021
QLD UNDER 15, UNDER 18 STATE TEAMS NAMED
Ipswich SHS have the difficult first up assignment of hosting the Tom Weaver-Oskar Bryant led Palm beach Currumbin SHS outfit going for a third successive Langer Trophy.
PBC will field eight on debut - Josh Lynn, Zac Munn, Hunter Ploegsma, Jayden Wright, Reico Ratana, Isaiah Scanlan, Travis May and Tanu Nona.
The champions are without state player of the carnival, centre Deine Mariner, for round 1 only, but still have plenty of experience in the likes of Reef Sommerville, Weaver and Bryant, along with representative forwards Jack Cullen and Ryan Foran.
Ipswich SHS have plenty of forward power courtesy of Samson Sauaso, Tommy Luhrman, Kulikefu Finefeuiaki and Josiah Pahulu, so watch this space.
The round 1 blockbuster looms as the Marsden SHS v Keebra Park SHS encounter, when four Queensland schoolboy representatives will feature.
Herman Tofaeono and Blake Mozer (both Keebra SHS) will feature against Marsden SHS state merit team players, fullback Leon Te Hau and centre Nathaniel Tangimatataiti.
New-comers Mabel Park SHS and Coombabah SHS will clash at Runaway Bay, a huge moment for those respective communities.
Coombabah are back in the Langer Trophy for the first time in five years, while Mabel Park SHS will make its debut.
