THE Titans have vowed to give young forward Max King some clarity about his NRL future as soon as possible as uncertainly looms around where he will be next month.
King is understood to have signed with the Melbourne Storm from 2020 and was expected to head south before the June 30 transfer deadline to start his time under supercoach Craig Bellamy.
THE BEST 10 TITANS PLAYERS THIS YEAR
The 22-year-old appeared to be being wished well in the Titans sheds after their 24-20 loss to the Warriors last Friday but his departure may now be delayed until the end of the year as Gold Coast management weigh up several factors.
The prospect of star lock Jai Arrow facing a lengthy period on the sidelines due to an ankle injury has left a gaping hole in the Titans pack; King could be a suitable candidate to fill that void and help give fans something to cheer about after a dismal 4-10 start to the year.
PBC V KEEBRA: CAPTAINS’ FINAL WORDS, TEAM LISTS
The club are also obliged to have their top 30 roster filled by June 30; failure to do so would leave them at risk of a sanction.
The recent signings of Tanah Boyd and Kallum Watkins means Gold Coast right now do have 30 players on their list but in addition to King’s situation, there is considerable doubt about whether Tyrone Peachey will return to Penrith or not in the coming days.
When approached about King’s immediate future, Titans chairman Dennis Watt said the club will do their best to not stand in his way.
“We have got a really high regard for Max,” Watt said.
MENINGA: ‘THEIR TALENTS ARE ON DISPLAY FOR EVERYONE TO SEE’
“He is an outstanding young man with great potential and we’d like to give him some certainty as quickly as possible.”
Watt added that English recruit Watkins is expected to arrive in the next couple of weeks.
“He is a proven big match player who performs well under pressure,” Watt said.
“He played very well in the World Cup out here in 2017, he was probably the X-factor in the English side. He has won a few premierships over there and is the captain of Leeds, so he is a leader.”
