The Bulldogs’ major sponsor doesn’t want to see Adam Elliott sacked and has revealed what the back-rower said to him after his toilet tryst with NRLW star Mille Boyle was exposed.

On Monday, Canterbury confirmed it was co-operating with the NRL Integrity Unit regarding an investigation into Elliott being asked to leave a Gold Coast restaurant on Sunday afternoon.

Management at the venue asked Elliott to leave after he was discovered in the men’s bathroom with Boyle, where they reportedly shared a kiss.

Boyle, who plays for the Broncos, told The Daily Telegraph: “Look, all we did was have a kiss in the bathroom. It’s been taken way out of context. It’s a big kerfuffle about nothing.”

Canterbury’s major sponsor, pub baron Arthur Laundy, has urged Elliott to give up alcohol and wants him to remain at the club. Laundy also spoke about the phone call the 26-year-old made to apologise as he was stood down for the final two rounds of the season while the Integrity Unit investigates.

“Last night Adam called me and he was so down, he knew he’d done the wrong thing,” Laundy told the Sydney Morning Herald. “He said, ‘I’m so sorry I let you down.’ I said, ‘You’ve let yourself down’.

“I told him, ‘I’m still here for you and will always be here for you’.

“Last night he said, ‘I will never, ever let you down again’. I have to believe it and will help him.”

Some Bulldogs powerbrokers reportedly want to tear up Elliott’s contract but Laundy, who helped convince the forward to stay at Belmore and reject a more lucrative offer to join the Warriors, is hoping that doesn’t happen.

Elliott has undergone alcohol counselling this year after an incident in the pre-season involving former teammate Michael Lichaa and Lichaa’s fiancee. Lichaa reportedly caught the back-rower kissing his partner.

In 2018, Elliott was fined $25,000 when he and teammate Asipeli Fine were charged with wilful and obscene exposure during the Bulldogs’ Mad Monday celebrations.

After suffering a season-ending shoulder injury midway through 2020, Elliott has returned to the fray this year and retained his regular spot in the Bulldogs’ best 17. He has made 18 appearances this season and played his 100th NRL game against the Warriors in round 22.

Elliott will miss the Bulldogs’ upcoming clashes with the Sea Eagles and Tigers, but neither match will influence his side’s final ladder position.

Having won only two games for the season, the Bulldogs have been consigned to their first 16th-placed finish since 2008.
