Brisbane Broncos fans are split on who they think is the best person to replace coach Kevin Walters after this week’s shock announcement that he will part ways with the club.

A reader poll in The Courier-Mail revealed Blues coach Michael “Madge’’ Maguire and his Maroons counterpart Billy Slater were clear favourites, with ex-Ipswich Jets co-coaches Ben and Shane Walker trailing in third place.

The poll had more than 5000 votes by Saturday morning, September 28, with Maguire on 30 per cent and Slater nipping at his heels on 28 per cent. About 18 per cent favoured the Walkers.

GIVE MAGUIRE A GO

Bruce: He coached the reds in union which is a lot more technical a game than league plus he played league so I think he would have no trouble picking it up.

Brian: People saying they don’t want Maguire because he’s the NSW coach but we’d take Bellamy in a heart beat! Deal with it folks and move on.

Tired of rejection: I can’t believe the number of fair weathered Bronco Supporters threatening to follow another team if Madge gets the job. Time to grow up, people.

Neil: Maguire is the best option or they should go and approach Jason Taylor.

Maxwell: If Madge takes the Broncos job, it’s a triple blow to NSW. We loose our state of origin coach, Broncos get a top no nonsense coach which will improve them, and the Queensland state of origin team will be more competitive against a NSW side no longer coached by Madge.

Jeff: Gee, let’s face it the options apart from Madge are not worth much! How sad the coaching list is these days.

John: How could you allow a true blue coach into a famous maroon club?

TJ: Please we don’t want or need Michael Macquire as the Broncos coach.

Zorb: People are going on about Maguire winning the state of origin and, hence, he was the sole reason behind it. Would he have been as successful had he had quite a different roster?
