The 2025 Queensland Representative School Sport calendar has been released, with some surprise clashes posing questions for many cross-code athletes across the state.
In 2024, carnival dates clashed on seven occasions.
The preliminary version of 2025 dates again feature seven direct clashes (all seven impacting girls while five impact boys) and three overlapping carnival dates.
“These situations enable students to make choices while creating opportunities for others to participate in State Championships, promoting greater inclusion and representation in these prestigious events,” a spokesperson from the Queensland Government, Department of education said.
All up, these 15 carnivals impact 13 sports across age groups spanning 10-19 years boys and girls.
Baseball, volleyball, rugby union and surfing - all of which featured in clashes this year - have been moved to standalone tournaments in 2025.
Netball, rugby 7s and water polo are three of the proposed clashes/ overlaps.
“The Queensland Representative School Sport calendar offers Queensland students aged 10-19 years extensive opportunities to compete at the state representative level.
“ The calendar includes 55 state championships and 99 events across 21 sports.
“The calendar is complex and while every effort is made to avoid clashes, occasional overlaps are inevitable.”
Who is most impacted?
1. Australian football (five) is the most impacted sport, with three girls age groups (10-12, 13-15 and 16-18 years) and two boys age groups (10-12 and 13-15 years) featured in the list of clashes.
2. Tennis, basketball, hockey and rugby league feature thrice each
3. 15 years (combined boys and girls) are the most impacted age group, with 16 instances of a clash. This is followed closely by 16 and 17 years (15 clashes) and 18 years (14 clashes). The least impacted age group, with just nine instances of a clash, is the 10 years.
