National U19 rugby championship: Waratahs v Brumbies stars, standouts, scorers in Rd 2

A purple patch and big performances have shined a light on the rising stars of NSW rugby. Stars, scorers in NSW Waratahs v Brumbies U19 national rugby championship Rd 2 battle.

NSW Waratahs young guns have produced a try-fest in round two of the national U19 rugby championships, outplaying the ACT Brumbies eight tries to two in an entertainer at their home ground.

The Waratahs came back from a 7-0 deficit on home turf to take the match 55-15 and extended their winning run in the competition to two.

Earlier, the Gen Blue U16s also claimed a win to remain undefeated in the competition which started just a week ago.

An eight minute purple patch saw the Waratahs U19s score three tries in the space of eight minutes late in the first half to help them to a 34-15 halftime jump.

They then added another three in the second to take the big 40 point win.

Sydney Universities Tom Morrison was one of the standouts in the match along with Clem Halaholo who scored two tries and Sydney Uni teammate Jack Matthews who scored a try, made six from eight conversions and kicked a penalty.

Others scorers in the match for the Waratahs were Jackson Ropata, Riley Hemsworth from Eastwood, Aaron Dimovitch from Randwick and teammate Charlie Worthington.

Coach Mike Cross said despite the scoreline his charged need to continue to improve.

“There were passages of brilliance but we just struggled to get into our rhythm and find shape,’’ he said.

STARS OF U16 WARATAHS WIN

“We created a lot of space and scored some good tries but we weren't as clinical as we would have liked.’’

Cross was impressed with Jack Matthew’s performance.

“He had a great game and kicked well. His positional play was great.

“Jackson (Ropata) was strong in defence and good in attack and Charlie Worthington was good again. He commits to everything.

“Tom Morrison was outstanding as well.’'
