It was a match which threw the spotlight on the next generation of Australian rugby but just one try was scored in the Gen Blue NSW Waratahs match against the Queensland Reds in Brisbane on Sunday.
Spectators had to wait until the second half for Hills Sports High School student Daryus Sione to score the first - and only - try of the match on a wet and windy morning in Brisbane.
The tiring Gen Blue boys showed true grit to then keep the Reds at bay for the remainder of the match.
“It started to heat up at the end and it had been a long morning. If it had gone on much longer we might have been run down,’’ said coach Peter Dumbleton.
“It was brilliant. A massively physical game.’’
The first half saw the Reds lead 6-3 courtesy of two penalty conversions to the Waratah’s one.
The visitors then took the match 13-6 with captain Mathew Gough from St Joseph’s College and the Northern Barbarians Rugby Club, a standout for the young NSW side, and Jarvis Orr from Knox Grammar and the Terrigal Trojans Rugby Club, named Man of the Match.
“The conditions were pretty difficult, mistakes were always going to be expected. I though the boys adapted well to tighten things up in the second half,’’ Dumbleton said.
“We just decided to keep things tighter and play in the right areas of the field.
“We never got too far away so there was always a threat there.’’
Dumbleton said it was a team effort from his young charges, some who had left their homes at 3am to be at the airport in time for their flight north on Sunday morning.
“The team played as a collective. There were no major superstars,’’ he said.
“They worked hard for each other. This is a good, really tight knit group who work hard for each other.
“The camaraderie in the group is great and in the coaching staff also.
“But I thought out captain Mat was very good and our man of the match.’’
