Will it be back-to-back championships for the Logan Thunder or can the Cairns Dolphins spoil the party?

That will be the question on the fourth and final day of the Basketball Queensland Under-16 Girls State Championships in Toowoomba with the two powerhouses to clash with a gold medal on the line.

All games on Toowoomba Grammar’s court one will be livestreamed in this story.

After six games at the tournament, hosted by Toowoomba Basketball at Toowoomba Grammar and The Glennie School, both the Thunder and Dolphins are both undefeated.

Logan, who claimed last year’s title, have gone through without a hiccup and in dominant fashion beating the South West Metro Pirates 91-24 in the semi-final.

The victory kept an undefeated streak, which stretched back to the pool stages of last year’s under-16 championships, alive.

But who was the team who last beat the Thunder?

It was the Dolphins in the last pool game of the 2021 tournament played at Auchenflower Stadium.

Cairns have been in impressive form this week, recording massive wins over the Southern Districts Spartans, the Pirates and also earning their way into the grand final with a huge three-pointer with just seconds left in their semi-final against the Gold Coast to beat the Rollers by two points.

The championship game will see the young guns of Queensland basketball go head-to-head with the Thunder, led by Prasayus Notoa, Vahayaliah Seumanutafa and Alleah Hanson, taking on Taryn Bond, Andrianna Francis and the Dolphins.

Dolphins coach, Geoff Benson, said he was extremely proud of his group’s performance this week.

“Logan are the benchmark in this competition, with a great coach and star-studded team,” he said.

“We have six bottom age players and are super excited just to be playing against them.

“We will play with as much ticker as north teams always do and if we can stick to our game plan we will hopefully be in the ballpark”

The grand final tips-off at 3.30pm with the final day of livestreaming also featuring the second and third division gold medal games as well as the Division 1 bronze medal clash between the Pirates and Rollers.

The Logan Thunder have solidified themselves as one of the most dominant junior teams in junior competition in Queensland after completing their undefeated season with a gold medal.

Logan, whose last defeat came almost a year ago at the hands of Cairns in the 2021 state championships, have claimed back-to-back titles after a 34-point victory over a valiant Dolphins side at Toowoomba Grammar School.

The Thunder had to work for it though with Cairns giving them the biggest challenge of the tournament.

Logan ran out to an early lead and extended their advantage to almost 30 points before a Dolphins fight back in the second half where Geoff Benson’s side even reduced the deficit to under 20.

But Logan responded with Vahayliah Seumanutafa leading the way, scoring 30 points, as the Thunder fired back, ending the game and tournament with a convincing win.

Alleah Hanson was also impressive for Logan with 17 points while Prasayus Notoa and Sharni Reisinger scored 12 and 11 points respectively.

Taryn Bond was the top scorer for the Dolphins with 17 points as Cairns capped-off a memorable tournament with a silver medal.

Benson said he was extremely proud of his team’s efforts this week, especially with six bottom-aged players in the group.

He also said he thought his group played with a lot of heat throughout the tournament.
