TUGUN captain Nick Harrold believes his side “will only get stronger and stronger” now that they have put their slow start into the distant past.
The Seahawks were tipped as Rugby League Gold Coast premiership heavyweights but had just one win after seven rounds, leaving them stranded outside the top five as recently as last month.
But three straight wins have since propelled them up to third place and they could move closer to second by the end of the weekend if they beat Bilambil on Sunday at Boyd St and Southport fail to knock off leaders Burleigh on Saturday at Pizzey Park.
“We have really worked hard,” Harrold said.
“Obviously we have had a lot of new faces in our squad this year.
“It has taken a little while for us to get all sort of on the same page and now we’re seeing the results.
“It did take a little bit longer (to gel) than we expected but it is all heading in the right direction at the moment.”
All of Tugun’s wins in their three-game streak have been decided by four points or less, including an “amazing” on the buzzer 14-10 victory over Currumbin last weekend thanks to a late Ethan Roberts try.
Their Round 12 opponents Bilambil have been up and down in 2019 – they have lost six of nine despite twice upsetting the Tigers – but won’t be taken lightly, Harrold said.
“They are well coached and they stick around, they don’t give up,” he added.
Runaway Bay will host Currumbin in the other Sunday game.
