THERE’S surf lifesaving clubs and then there’s Steak Club.

While they spend their mornings battling it out in the surf, the boys from Currumbin SLSC have found the perfect way to replenish, and it’s earnt quite a reputation.

ECKSTEIN’S NEW ROLE

It all started when Vikings Ben Buxton, Hayden White and Sam Gill moved in together.

“I was sort of the fourth ring-in who started getting invited,” fellow Viking Jackson Maynard said.

“The boys were all living together at this point and they would go and buy these massive streaks from the butcher every Wednesday.”

And so, Steak Club was born. Every Wednesday, the boys’ humble Glitter Strip abode is filled with wafts of sizzling meat, which is delicately salted by White.

Each week, an extra guest attends, which has led to some fierce competition among those vying for an invitation.

SLAVEN’S SUMMER SLOG PAYS OFF

“Everyone is trying to come,” Maynard said. “Everyone is always asking, ‘can I come to Steak Club’.”

It’s not an exaggeration to suggest Steak Club is the Gold Coast’s equivalent of a Met Gala invitation.

Maynard said the group has leveraged their popularity to welcome some of the sport’s greatest athletes.

DIXON’S BIGGER THAN TEXAS

“We had Zane Holmes over once because he was someone we all admired growing up,” he said.

Other guests include six- time Coolangatta Gold champion Ali Day and Olympic swimmer David McKeon.

Despite all the acclaim, including an Instagram account which has grown to nearly 300 followers, Maynard believes the tradition is all a bit of fun.

“It’s a lot of meat,” he said. “They have a full regimen.

“It’s just a really good way to get the boys together every week for a meal and a chat.

“It’s a bit of humour but it’s good fun.”
