HE’S Queensland’s most successful ironman, but this summer, retired surf life saving great Shannon Eckstein will switch allegiances to South Australia.
Eckstein has been announced as one of two SA Reds coaches for the new Super Surf Teams League series set to kick off at Bulli next month.
The league is a surf carnivals style competition that will run in conjunction with three rounds of the Nutri-Grain Series.
Eckstein, who was approached for the role by Surf Life Saving SA CEO Damien Marangon, said he was excited to help grow the sport of surf life saving in South Australia.
“This is an amazing opportunity for me to give back to the sport, and to help create a high performance environment for a great group of up and coming athletes,” he said.
“I’m excited to be involved in developing these athletes and see them reach their potential.”
Eckstein, nicknamed ‘the professor’ due to his meticulous approach to competition, will coach the team alongside former elite athlete, Claire Drummond, who is also an associate professor at Flinders University.
