THE Gold Coast Cycling Club are waiting to hear whether Gold Coast City Council works may be behind the flooding of the Nerang Velodrome which caused extensive damage over the weekend.
Contractors are currently investigating whether a drain may have been blocked during the council works, causing the unprecedented flooding that rendered the track unusable and damaged club equipment.
“It’s quite coincidental for those two events to occur,” said club president Dominique Verstreken. “We’ve had rain like this before but not flooding like this.
“We haven’t had any evidence to suggest it’s the case yet.”
Councillor Peter Young, who played a big role in acquiring the funds to help upgrade the track, said that he had spoken to an officer who had been at the site yesterday.
“I haven’t been to the site yet but I spoke with an officer and put that proposition to him (about contract works causing the flooding) and he didn’t believe that was the case,” he said.
“No evidence has been found that suggests a blockage was caused by the works.”

About 50 club members attended a working bee on Sunday to begin the difficult clean-up process, the community uniting their varying skills and equipment to help salvage whatever they could.
Club equipment like uniforms, their PA system, shoes, a podium, and shelving had to be thrown away due to extensive damage.
“When the community bands together, we can move mountains,” said Verstreken.
“We were overwhelmed with the support we received.”
RAIN WREAKS HAVOC ON COAST SPORTING FIXTURES
While the club is yet to receive official confirmation that the velodrome track will be repaired, Verstreken is hopeful local and state governments will unite to replace the track.
“This track is used by trail walkers and runners and a whole array of people,” he said.
“You come down here on a nice afternoon and you’d be hard-pressed to get a park.
“It’s an asset for the city and the Gold Coast needs a velodrome.
“From the Anna Meares velodrome at Sleeman’s out to Warwick, we’re the only one in the region.”
