AS the Gold Coast Knights prepare for the biggest game in their history against the A-League’s Newcastle Jets, the Bulletin takes a look at five local stars who have punched above their weight.

OSKAR DILLON (FOOTBALL — GOLD COAST KNIGHTS)

AN electrician by trade, the 19-year-old has been a key figure in the Knights’ run to back-to-back Gold Coast Premier League championships after finding a home in defence. His challenge tonight is to contain a Newcastle frontline that carried the Jets to last season’s A-League grand final.

ANTHONY DON (NRL — GOLD COAST TITANS)

A FAN favourite at the Titans, Don has become one of the struggling club’s most consistent performers since making his debut in 2013. With 65 tries, the flying winger has made the most of his talent to sit second on the club’s all-time tryscoring list.

JACK LESLIE (AFL — GOLD COAST SUNS)

ONE of the most improved players on the Suns list, the 23-year-old tall defender came of age in 2017 to make 13 senior appearances. While he is never the first picked in the backline, Leslie always plays his role when called upon.

SAM STOSUR (TENNIS)

AT a time when women’s tennis was, and still is, dominated by a handful of stars, the Gold Coast-raised 34-year-old reached a career-high ranking of no. 4 in 2011 before going on to win the US Open that year. It remains her only Grand Slam singles title, with the weight of public expectation often conspiring against her.

GRANT IRVINE (SWIMMING)

PART of coach Michael Bohl’s high performance team at Griffith University on the Coast, Irvine has squeezed every bit of potential out of his 27-year-old body to make his Olympic debut in Rio. While he missed the 100m and 200m butterfly finals, his crowning glory came at this year’s Commonwealth Games, where he claimed bronze in the 100m fly and gold as part of the Australian 4x100m medley relay team.
