MARQUEE man Teddy Watson says he may need to become more “greedy” to develop into Surfers Paradise’s goalscoring saviour.
After two years with the Gold Coast Knights, the 31-year-old has arrived at Lex Bell Oval amid much fanfare as Apollo fight to rectify the problems in front of goal that plagued their 2018 Premier League campaign.
SACKED COACH OF THE YEAR EYES RETURN
The former Chelsea and West Ham academies player has so far delivered on those expectations, finding the net nine times in pre-season, including his second hat-trick in last weekend’s 6-1 FFA Cup win over Kingscliff.
But as Surfers prepare for Saturday’s season opener at home to Nerang, Watson said he must continue to develop his killer instinct.
“I think I need to stay in that box and stop coming short all the time. Maybe (I need to) be a little bit greedy and just try and be consistent, enjoy my football and do what I do,” Watson, who has reunited with former Knights coach Alex Morrison at Surfers, said.
“I know finishing was a big priority (from last season). With Alex giving me a free role up front I can kind of concentrate on scoring goals.
CHALLENGES NOTHING NEW FOR FORGOTTEN MAN
“Last season (with the Knights) was very defensive, I had to get back for corners and stuff like that which is all good, but for my style and a team that needs to score goals, I need to be in and around the box.
“There is pressure but I enjoy the pressure. Good players enjoy the pressure, you’ve just got to step up to it and I think this season is going to be the time to step up. Alex has got confidence in me.”
The full-time return of former Gold Coast United frontman Chris Broadfoot has also given Surfers an attacking edge and Watson is adamant the partnership can propel the side to this year’s title.
The pair will be key figures when former Surfers coach Dave Benigno returns to Lex Bell Oval for the first time as Nerang’s new mentor at 6pm tomorrow.
“We definitely need to be top four, which I think we will, but I’m hoping to win the league again and it’d be nice to get the double and go on a cup run,” Watson, who helped the Knights reach last year’s FFA Cup Round of 32, said.
BROADBEACH BRUSHING OFF LEAGUE EXPECTATIONS
“We’ve just drawn Brisbane Knights (in Round 3) and they’re a good team, we played them with Gold Coast Knights and only beat them 1-0 I think.
“The FFA Cup I thought was brilliant last season and to do anything like that would just be brilliant.”
Broadbeach and Tweed United open the season tonight, while Burleigh Heads will host Palm Beach at 4pm on Saturday.
At 4pm on Sunday, Mudgeeraba will travel to Coomera’s Viney Park.
