Broadbeach brushing aside title talk in Brisbane Women’s Premier League despite Virginia win

BROADBEACH United are brushing aside the weight of Brisbane Women’s Premier League expectation despite disposing of a likely title challenger at Nikiforides Family Park on Saturday.

BROADBEACH United are brushing aside the weight of Brisbane Women’s Premier League expectation despite disposing of a likely title challenger at Nikiforides Family Park on Saturday.

Held to a 1-1 draw against fellow BWPL debutant Southport in Round 1, the Dolphins returned to their form of 2018 with a 2-0 win against Virginia United in their second outing.

WHITE KNIGHT SHOWS A-LEAGUE POTENTIAL

Both sides are expected to push reigning double winners Annerley for this season’s crown, with Broadbeach coming off a perfect Gold Coast Premier League campaign and Virginia recruiting heavily under new coach Anthony Costa.

However, Dolphins captain Gemma Hicks said talk of a title challenge had no place within the playing group.

“We’re not going to put any pressure on ourselves, we just want to go out and play the best we can,” the 22-year-old midfielder said.

“Obviously if that comes with being up the top and being one of the tougher teams that’s even better. But we’re just looking to improve on our own game and not worry about what other teams are doing.

“We want to keep pushing forward and playing better football. We were moving too much out of position against Southport, whereas against Virginia we held our shape and gelled a lot more than we did in the first game.

“(Saturday) we played well but it’s definitely not the best we can play.”

Elsewhere on Saturday, Robina City bounced back from their opening-day disaster with a 2-0 win at home to Ipswich City, while Coomera fell 4-1 away to Annerley.

CLUB CHASING FFA CUP HISTORY

Southport smashed Taringa Rovers 5-0 at Ashmore Village Park.

“We have worked on our organisation in defence and have focused on working in the final third this week,” Warriors coach Trent Gregson said.

“It really showed on the field, we controlled possession and we had a few opportunities we didn’t finish.”
