State title curse claims another victim as Lyndon bombs out

Tanyn Lyndon has just missed out on the Aussies ironman final, calling many to cry curse after he won the State title just weeks ago.

THE state title curse has claimed another victim with Queensland ironman champion Tanyn Lyndon just missing out on the Aussies ironman final.

Invented by soon to be retired great Shannon Eckstein, many local ironmen believe that if you win the Queensland state title, you have no chance at the nationals.

Not even a home beach advantage could save the Kurrawa product as Lyndon succumbed to the mercy of the sea, finishing ninth in his semi-final when only the top eight go through to Sunday’s showdown.

“I had a bit of a mishap in the ironman,” he said.

“I was sitting quite pretty in fifth then a wave from behind brought a couple of guys up on me and I just missed by one.

“That’s surf so I think the curse of winning the state title might have got me but that’s all right you get that.”

Aisde from Lyndon, the ironman final will shape up as predicted with Shannon Eckstein, brother Caine, Trevor Hendy, Matt Bevilacqua, Ali Day, Matt Poole, Corey Fletcher, Hayden White and Jackson Maynard all qualifiying.

Day, who has been the seasons’ dominant ironman, just made the final after claiming the eighth and final spot in his semi-final.

While dissatisfied with the result, Lyndon said it was all part of the sport.

“I think I’d be lying to say I wasn’t disappointed but there’s always next year and I’ve had so much fun out here racing in the waves,” he said.

“It’s anyone’s luck out there.”

HURRICANE ECKSTEIN NO MATCH FOR CURRUMBIN

After having to work earlier this week, the apprentice carpenter said that he was starting to feel the effects of daily competition.

“I was saying before, I wish I’d been able to get Monday and Tuesday off work but was on the tools earlier this week and backed it up Wednesday,” he said.

“I’m feeling a little bit sore now but nah I’m going all right.

“I’ve lost count of the amount of times (he’s rounded the can this week).”

Yesterday, the 26-year-old was part of the Kurrawa team that claimed silver in the male surf belt and fourth in the male ski relay.

“In my eyes, the team events are the pinnacle of our sport, being out there with your mates and having a good crack,” he said.
