NOT even an inspired board leg from surf lifesaving star Caine Eckstein could stop the team from Currumbin as they went on to take out the open male board relay.
Viking Hayden White was tasked with the opening leg of the race at Broadbeach yesterday and used his local knowledge to get his team off to a flying start.
“I snuck through past the break and was hanging on to a few guys in front of me,” White said.
“I thought if I can get around the cans then I can have first crack at these waves and I was lucky to pick one and ride it in.”
Jackson Maynard was tasked with the second leg of the race and had to fight hard to stay in front of Eckstein as Shannon’s younger brother put on a show, making up serious ground for his team after White established a decent lead.
“Caine Eckstein was absolutely flying and got right on my tail so I just hung on for dear life,” he said.
“I got around the third can and the rest is history.”
The third and final leg was left to Corey Fletcher as Currumbin turned for home.
“I love going third, I crack under pressure if I have to go first,” Fletcher said.
“I was hurting going around the can and then I looked back and there was nothing (no waves)
coming but then one came at the right moment for me and I was the only one on it.”
