NOT one, not two, not three but seven sets of siblings from North Burleigh surf lifesaving club will compete in this weekend’s Coolangatta Gold junior challenge.
REVEALED: 10 OF THE GOLD COAST’S MOST PROMISING SURF LIFESAVING TALENTS
Not only will the 14 super siblings take on the course, but club officials expect around 15 other juniors from the club to take on the 1.75km endurance race which features a 450m board leg, 350m swim leg and nearly one kilometre of running.
Nippers coach Nicole Locke said that it wasn’t planning nor co-ordination that led to the quirky coincidence but rather a result of North Burleigh’s core values.
SUPERSTITIONS? BIGGEST PEST? GOLD TIP? SURF STARS REVEAL ALL
“North Burleigh is such a big family club so we have even more sets of siblings,” she said.
“Some families have younger siblings as well who will be old enough to compete next year so there will be even more siblings running around in the Gold.
“We have roughly 110 kids at training so we’re probably have one of the bigger nipper programs on the Gold Coast but the kids all want to be there.”
While she expects all of North Burleigh’s emerging stars to put in stellar performance at the Gold, Locke believes that the Leonardi and Schafer siblings are ones to watch.

“They’re (Ashlee and Matt Schafer) relatively new to the sport and it’s their first time competing in the event and only their second season of board paddling and they’ve already come so far,” she said.
“I’ve trained the Leonardi’s for a while and they’re great kids to work with.”
As for the most competitive siblings, the Callaghan’s and Newton’s take the cake!
“Both kids in both families achieved podium finishes last year in the event,” Locke said.
“They’re really competitive kids and there’s a bit of sibling rivalry at training as well which helps.”
Locke admits that it is hard at times to keep tabs on all of North Burleigh’s sibling stars, with more than 100 emerging nippers attending each training session.
“Sometimes I call them the wrong names but they know who I’m talking about most of the time,” she joked.
