HOW CLUB IS TACKLING SPATE OF SUICIDES
SURF LIFESAVING
THE Gold Coast’s favourite club is back and they’re taking the ongoing pandemic seriously.
Currumbin’s Steak Club had their annual Wednesday night meeting last week but club social media manager/founder Hayden White was taking no risks.
Donning a mask for protection, the grilling continued.
We’re surprised the boys managed to find their token oversized steaks at their local Coles.
BASKETBALL
ROLLERS basketball coach Mick Conlon has come up with the perfect way to spend his time self-isolating after the NBL1 season was cancelled.
Speaking to the Bulletin, Conlon said he would have to find new hobbies with a number of venues closed due to coronavirus.
“I know it doesn’t look like it, but I do go to the gym a lot and now all the gyms are closed,” he said.
The solution?
“I’ll have more time to annoy my wife,” Conlon said.
RACING
COVID-19 is doing more than just messing with Ryan Plumb’s racing season.
Plumb and partner Jane Kiernan were due to be married back in her home in Ireland in the coming months.
That is now looking unlikely.
Plumb has a three point lead in the Gold Coast jockeys premiership and it has been made slightly easier given rival Dan Griffin, who is six behind and lives on the Sunshine Coast, is going to be riding in the Metro North Zone.
“It’s funny, out of all the jockeys it was Dan Griffin who reached out to me to ask how I’m going after realising I wasn’t at the races,” Plumb said.
RACING
Tom Tate may not be celebrating his successful mayoral campaign but he could be cheering on a winner this Friday.
Tate owns a 2.5 per cent share in Global Citizen who will run in the Maiden Plate (1200m) at the Gold Coast Turf Club.
The Mayor won the share at a charity function by being the highest bidder of an auction, with the money going towards supporting those affected by muscular dystrophy.
CYCLING
Gold Coast Cycling Club president Dom Verstreken has 250kg of chocolate he is in need of offloading.
Verstreken owns Belgian Delights, a chocolate store on the Gold Coast that has had a lot of orders cancelled due to COVID-19.
The store has put on a range of big discounts in a bid to sell the stock and it is Gold Coasters who will benefit.
Head to www.bdchocolate.com.au to see the deals.
RUBGY LEAGUE
FORMER Titans favourite Konrad Hurrell is keeping himself busy during this lockdown.
Now playing for Leeds in the English Super League, the 28-year-old centre, who played 45 games for the Titans from 2016-18, posted a video of his alter ego – a DJ.
When one fan asked how much for tickets to the show, Hurrell replied: “It’s free, just stand outside the window.”

BASKETBALL
THERE’S no basketball currently being played in Queensland but that doesn’t prevent the Gold Coast Rollers and North Gold Coast Seahawks from enhancing their rivalry.
Speaking last week about how the Seahawks were planning to survive the coronavirus crisis, Seahawks general manager Dwayne Vale had a sneaky swiper at his Coast rivals.
“Unless you’re Joel McInnes and Gold Coast basketball who sleep on a pile of money, most associations are going to struggle,” Vale joked.
NETBALL
JEANTE Strydom was one of the Bond Bull Sharks stars throughout the 2019 Sapphire Series.
The South African is currently visiting family in her native country, meaning she is barred from re-entering Australia for the foreseeable future due to increasing travel regulations.
But rather than worry about whether they will regain their star defender for the 2020 Sapphire series, which has been delayed until October, Bond director of netball Stu Allen was more worried about Strydom’s separation from a beloved possession.
“I’m more worried about her being separated with her bike,” Allen said.
“She’s obsessed by it.”
BIG Q&A WITH COAST SPORTING ICON
CRICKET
THE coronavirus may have added a layer of difficulty to every Coast sporting club but Mudgeeraba-Nerang are finding ways to overcome it and keep the hard work going.
“Adherence to social distancing policies did not stop some special people doing great things for the club,” the Kookaburra Cup club wrote on Facebook, accompanied with a range of working bee photos.
“We need another eight or so people on hand throughout different sections of the club (today).
“Thanks to Josh Nelson, Rob Nelson, Greg Blood, Paul Butler, Dean Whitchurch, Howard Biddle, Rhys Finn, Stuart Welsh, Elijah Welsh, Joshua Gill, Greg Munro and Keegan Gill who took turns rolling through the club to help out.”

YOU know things are slow when debate in Titans fan groups turns to (drum roll, please) ... Jarryd Hayne.
LOST TITANS: BEST OF OUR SERIES
With no action on the NRL fields, one leading supporter site took a sorry walk down memory lane and reopened the debate over the merits of the signing of Hayne.
“While I respect the fact that Jarryd Hayne was a very talented player and at his peak near unstoppable I believe he was the worst signing in our club’s history,” Oliver John wrote.
