QBL dreams start, McVeigh reaches his

While dreams of QBL glory are now starting, one Gold Coast junior has just reached his own.

QBL TO KICK OFF IN TWO MONTHS

Rosters have been taking shape for the two Gold Coast QBL clubs participating this year.

North Gold Coast Seahawks are back for their second season after a great effort from their ladies’ team to make the playoffs.

It’s a huge financial burden for teams to play and be competitive with most teams in the competition owning their own stadiums.

GOLD COAST BEST BASKETBALL FAMILY?

North Gold Coast Seahawks will be playing out of ‘The Nest’ at Runaway Bay this season, while the Gold Coast Rollers will be out of Carrara Indoor Stadium.

The Rollers finished their season at Carrara last year after the Commonwealth Games, the old girl of Gold Coast basketball getting a facelift from the Commonwealth Games’ legacy.

The draw has just been finalised and the battle of the Gold Coast will be held at Carrara Indoor Stadium this season on Friday, May 31.

Those who were in attendance last year will remember what a night it was for the Seahawks’ faithful as they punched ‘big brother’ in the eye. Hopefully this year’s clash will have as much emotion.

MCVEIGH GETS GREEN AND GOLD JERSEY

Gold Coaster Jack McVeigh achieved a lifelong dream last week suiting up for the Australian Boomers in their FIBA World Cup qualifiers. McVeigh got the opportunity as Australia had already won enough games to qualify and got to achieve his dream and suit up against Kazakhstan and Iran.

Jack becomes the first Gold Coaster to play for the open national men or women’s team since Jenny Whittle’s long Opals stint.

Jack has shown real promise in his rookie season with Adelaide this year and his trajectory within the game continues. I spoke to Jack and asked him how it was to be a Boomer.

“It’s something I’ve dreamed about,” he said.

“There’s no greater honour for an Australian basketball than playing in the Boomers or Opals. It was a privilege to wear the jersey and I hope to get the opportunity again.”

Well done, Jack.
