PALM Beach Currumbin QAFL coach Chad Owens says there is no excuse for the performance that led to the reigning premiers first loss of the season.
The Lions 10-game unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday with Morningside producing a shock 12.12 (84) to 10.13 (73) win at Jack Esplen Oval.
Owens lashed his team’s poor showing as they edge closer to the end of the regular season.
“We were just beaten by a better team on the day,” Owens said.
“There is no excuses. They got the ball first and beat us.

“We are still two games clear (at the top of the ladder) but there is a difference between losing and losing the right way.
“We steered away from a few team things. Losing happens but the way we lost was more disappointing that the result.”
Owens said he didn’t see the performance coming and refused to blame multiple injuries to key players on the result.
“A loss is always potentially going to come and when you go into a game you’re a 50-50 chance to win or lose,” Owens said.
“I don’t know (what happened) to be honest. We just weren’t on our game today and if you are off your game a little bit you will be beaten. Once they got their tails up away they went.”
Meanwhile, the Broadbeach Cats have moved into outright second after beating Mt Gravatt 12.10 (82) to 10.6 (66) at Subaru Oval on Saturday.
Cats coach Brett Andrews praised his side’s ability to grind out a result despite conceding they had struggled to find their best form since the Round 7 bye.
“It hasn’t been pretty since the bye but we are grinding away,” Andrews said.
“It’s just not clicking at the moment but to (the players) credit they don’t like losing.
“We just haven’t seemed to get rolling since the bye. We are getting — as every club does — a high turnover of players so there is a bit of cohesion to do. A few things just have to click.
“It was good to get (the win) and it’s great for the club.”
Surfers Paradise are third on the ladder following their 14.12 (96) to 7.10 (52) win over Labrador at Cooke Murphy Oval.
