NRL, AFL snub: Why those at the bottom need the true hand

THE NRL drew giggles of many fans and clenched fists of struggling businesses when they had the gall to plead for a government handout to fight coronavirus oblivion.

Their reasoning was understable, if not plausible, given so many others are fighting for their very livelihood at this horrible time.

See, the NRL argued that they are a valuable asset to society, one which gives us hope and an escape from the pressures of the real world (though those strains have since multiplied tenfold for many).

With that standings should come government protection, they said. A few million should do it.

No one can argue against that cause, as league, union, Aussie rules and all these other heavyweights keep a lot of good people employed.

The NRL and AFL are truly big business.

But take a walk down to your local Gold Coast sporting field and tell me the NRL is the one really in need.

These clubs run off the smell of an oily rag and the sweat of a few who simply don’t know how to quit.

If this terrible pandemic teaches us anything let’s hope it’s a big slice of perspective.

In a sporting sense, maybe we have had it too good for too long.

Many have argued that broken systems leave those at the top looked after and those at the bottom, well ... we’ll get around to them if we have time.

Sorry, but that now has to change.

It’s been taken for granted that the grassroots spawns those at the top and, through this almighty financial hardship, we are going to get a real glimpse of that.

Life is destined to be about regrouping and getting ourselves up form off the floor.

Well I don’t know too many better fighters than those who have been waging this war long before anyone had heard of the coronavirus.

Maybe it’s time we gave them a hand.
