JACKSON Fisher’s first few months on the Gold Coast were spent flying for football every weekend so doing it every second week in 2020 will be no problem.

Fisher has signed with the Southport Sharks NEAFL side for next year after a breakout season with the Broadbeach Cats QAFL team.

The 24-year-old moved to the Coast around 18 months ago and spent the early stages of his tenure here flying back to play football in Melbourne each weekend before opting to stay at home and play for the Cats.

Southport approached the midfielder about trying his hand at a higher level and Fisher has decided to take the plunge.

“I’m really excited. It’s a great opportunity for me to see where I’m at,” Fisher said.

“It’s the right time for me to have a shot at that level of footy.

“Broadbeach were a great club to me and allowed me to find me feet as I got cracking. When the opportunity came at Southport I had to give it a shot.”

Sharks football manager Jarrod Field said he had kept a close eye on Fisher throughout the 2019 season and expected him to fit in at a higher level.

“He has great skills and I think he will fit in,” Field said.

“Having spoken with him a few times he seems keen and has a good attitude. He is a terrific young man.”

Fisher will be joined in the team by former Suns AFL-listed player Connor Nutting, another Broadbeach product, who never got to make his debut at the highest level with Gold Coast.

Field said Nutting would bolster an already talent-packed forward line that included Josh Hall, Mitch Johnson and Jonathon Beech.

“We are starting to look pretty strong down there,” Field said.

“We have certainly got some fire power, it’s just a matter of how well they gel.

“He has speed and class and can kick goals. His speed and agility enable him to get separation from his opponents and put pressure on.”
