IT’S the experiment that could deliver a second straight flag for Southport and has convinced Sharks coach Stephen Daniel Tyler Roos could play in the AFL if given the chance.
Roos’ shift from halfback to the midfield has been a revelation in 2019 and one of the best moves orchestrated by any club this NEAFL season.
The 23-year-old has gone from nearly having to leave the side due to a move back home to becoming so influential that he is in the running to be crowned the NEAFL’s most valuable player.

Daniel revealed it was the masterful thinking of Sharks assistant coach Matt Lappin who suggested Roos’ positional switch in the pre-season after the club lost Josh Clayton.
“It was Matt Lappin who probably brought it to our attention,” Daniel said.
“We moved (Roos) in there for a wing role a couple of times last year and Matty brought it up in a meeting here.
“We lost Josh Clayton and we felt josh could give us that elite run that he has got, an AFL attribute we believe he has is his running. It’s proven to be a very handy call.”
Daniel said he thought Roos could have been a chance to be picked up in the mid-season draft this year and he is unsure of the level of potential interest in the silky ball user.
Daniel still believes Roos plays his best footy at halfback but has faith he could make an impact on AFL list in either position.

“It’s a tough one. At times you don’t know what recruiters are thinking,” Daniel said.
“They call you all the time. You answer calls from recruiters every two weeks.
“Personally I like him off halfback, he is having a ripper year in the midfield.
“I believe he could play football at the highest level if given the chance. But whether someone is willing to give him a go at it is up to them.
“He is a ripper kid. He is easy to coach, he is elite in his preparation and way he goes about it and he just loves the game.
“I thought he might be a show at the end of last year. This year even better year than last so fingers crossed to see what happens at the end of this year.”
