9-44! Coast cricketer’s remarkable day out

A Gold Coast cricketer has taken the remarkable figures of 9-44 – before leaving the country.

ENGLISHMAN Harry Foyle has finished his stint on the Gold Coast in perfect fashion, bowling Runaway Bay to victory with a remarkable nine-wicket haul.

Foyle will fly home on Sunday night due to financial reasons, little more than 24 hours after putting a huge dent in Coomera Hope Island’s Kookaburra Cup finals hopes.

The 22-year-old continued where he left off last Saturday, when he took five late wickets to add value to Bay’s first-innings 197, ultimately collecting 9-44 off 19 overs to bundle the Crocs out for 118.

Spinner Travis Harker was the other wicket-taker, trapping Aiden Winslow in front for the ninth dismissal of the innings.

Foyle credited a change in grip for his success and laughed a 10-for could have been possible if not for a dropped catch by captain Lydon Gibbons shortly before Harker’s wicket – but nevertheless he cut a satisfied figure.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet,” he said after eclipsing his previous career-best figures of 5-12.

“It was a really, really good experience and I’m really happy with it. It’s something that hasn’t happened to me before and probably won’t happen again.

“It’s a good way to finish my time on the Gold Coast.”

Foyle’s effort still ranks behind Paul Spence’s 10-14 in Bay’s record books but he did not rule out returning next summer for another crack.

He capped his day with 3-30 in the second innings as both sides pursued an outright result, although no extra points were awarded in the end.

Up at Alberton, the Hurricanes not only secured their return to finals cricket but put themselves within reach of the minor premiership with a 65-run win over Queens.

Player-coach Shane Connors did much of the damage, taking 7-59 on his 41st birthday.

“For an old fella, I didn’t think I would be bowling 20 overs in a day but as it turned out, it was overcast and the body held up OK,” he said.

“We’re progressing really nicely as a team. As coach I’m pretty happy.

“We’re just playing positive cricket, everyone is learning their roles.

“Last year was kind of a season to write off but they had a lot of fun and learnt a bit about themselves and now they have got the belief.”

Mudgeeraba Nerang (9-255) moved into the top four with a crushing win over leaders Burleigh (87 and 1-58) as medium pacer Dayne Siede claimed 5-16.

With a penultimate round bye, the Bushmen may need results to go their way to hold fourth though.

“I guess next week we’ll have to rely on some other results and we’ll have to see after the bye if we get a win in the last round whether we’ll make it,” said Bushmen captain Dylan McLaughlin, who missed much of the early season due to a broken thumb.

Half-centuries to Ryan Armstrong and Tom Scriven helped Broadbeach Robina chase down Helensvale Pacific Pines’ 244, while Southport Labrador (4-185) enjoyed a strong day against Surfers Paradise (183 and 8-112).
