Grogan medal winners revealed
On Sunday night AFL Queensland hosted its annual J.A. Grogan and QAFLW Best and Fairest awards night. With Gold Coast sides featuring in both 2019 senior grand finals, a number of Gold Coast players were rewarded for incredible seasons.

Palm Beach Currumbin midfielder Thomas Thynne was just pipped at the post by Vultures midfielder Frazer Neate after he picked up three votes in the final game of the year to win the 74th J.A. Grogan medal. Despite just falling short, Thynne had an incredible season. Often tagged, the explosive midfielder can play both on the inside and outside, he breaks lines and is behind a lot of the Lions forward ball movement.

15 votes: Kalinda Howarth, Bond University
15 votes: Jordan Zanchetta, Yeronga South Brisbane
13 votes: Jessica Wuetschner, Cooparoo
11 votes: Natalie Grider, University of Queensland
Lions AFLW midfield star Emily Bates was rewarded for a consistent and stand out season but it was 20-year-old Bond University forward Kalinda Howarth who turned heads on the Gold Coast. The crafty forward booted 31 goals for the season, taking out the QAFLW leading goal kicker award and helped Bond to a grand final in the process. Howarth was last month signed to the Suns for their inaugural AFLW season.
Syd Guildford trophy
He was leading the votes by 12 points when voting went dark after round 13 but Thomas Thynne’s incredible back half of the year saw him take out the Syd Guildford trophy for the QAFL’s most valuable player by a whopping 31 votes. The trophy, decided by a points system ranging from one to five assigned by each coach post-game, was Thynne’s to lose and a great reward for a standout season with the Lions.
QAFL team of the year
Palm Beach Currumbin’s 2019 dominance was rewarded with the Lions laying claim to six players in the QAFL team of the year, more than any other club. Jesse Sinclair was also named coach of the year. Fellow grand finalists Surfers Paradise had four players selected, defender Brody Haberfield being announced captain of the side. Broadbeach had two players feature as did Labrador.
QAFLW team of the year
QAFLW grand finalists Bond University had two representatives in the team of the year, crafty forward Kalinda Howarth and ruck Lauren Bella. Bull Sharks mentor Shane Atkins was also named coach of the year. Coolangatta also had two representatives, dynamic defensive duo Alexandra Hamlyn and Selina Priest getting the nod.
QAFL rising star
Broadbeach products Kwaby Boakye and Aiden Fyfe finished fifth and seventh in the voting for QAFL rising star with 11 and seven votes respectively.

QAFLW rising star
Bond University players Kalinda Howarth and Georgia Brehmer finished third and fourth in the voting with seven and six votes respectively. Suns listed player Ellie Hampson finished second for Coorparoo with 15 votes.
QAFL goal of the year
Surfers Paradise sharpshooter Daniel Van De Werken added one to the highlights reel this year with a magnificent gather in the pocket before weaving his way into corridor and snapping over incoming defenders to win goal of the year.
AFL Merit Award winners
Col Burke from Labrador AFC and Neil Mackay from Palm Beach Currumbin State High School took out merit awards.
QAFL reserves and colts leading goal kickers
Palm Beach Currumbin duo Nathan Carr and Riley Engels were dominant in front of the big sticks in the reserves and colts competitions respectively. Carr kicked 39 while Engels snagged 52.
