THREE members of Gold Coast United’s NPL Women’s squad could be a step closer to the W-League after spending the week trialling with Canberra United.
Looking to build on impressive campaigns in Queensland’s premier women’s competition, Georgia Elliston, Deeanna Thompson and Cassandra Zaffina arrived in the nation’s capital last weekend with the hope of breaking into the professional W-League ranks.

Attacker Elliston, 18, is a product of Palm Beach Currumbin High School’s Football Excellence Program and played for the Queensland under-19 schools team in 2017, while goalkeeper Zaffina arrived at United mid-season from Victorian NPLW outfit South Melbourne.
Former Palm Beach NPLW attacker and Mullumbimby junior Thompson was lured back to the Coast from Souths United this season, but her game time was limited due to a lingering knee problem.
But having fully recovered, she was given the chance to show Canberra her wares.

“(The Canberra trial) is another building block for me,” Elliston said before flying south.
“It’s a chance to see how
a fully professional club operates and what is expected of players. I’m heading into the trial with an open mind. I’ll give it my best and learn from the experience.”
