GOLD Coast United have continued their aggressive off-season recruitment drive with the signing of experienced Gold Coast Knights midfielder Justyn McKay.
Having already secured former A-League defender Kristian Rees as NPL coach and ex-Socceroos defender Michael Thwaite, United have now added McKay to their 2019 playing ranks.
English-born McKay has been a stalwart of Gold Coast NPL teams since the competition’s inception in 2013, making 100 appearances and scoring 17 goals in his time with Palm Beach/Gold Coast City.
The 31-year-old captained the 2014 Sharks side, which included Rees, to the NPL title double and appeared in the FFA Cup quarterfinals in 2014 and 2017.

He was an integral member of the Knights outfit that won this year’s Gold Coast Premier League premiership and championship, with Rees helping bring him to United after serving as an assistant coach to Grae Piddick at the Knights this season.

“Justyn’s a great signing. He’s a very talented footballer who leads by example on and off the park,” Rees said.
“He trains like he plays, prepares well and knows how to get the best out of himself and his teammates on game day. Off the pitch, he relates really well with all ages and having guys of the ilk of Justyn and Michael Thwaite around will set the tone of what’s expected across the club.

“He’ll be another fantastic role model for the club’s younger players.”
McKay began his football journey as an eight-year-old at the Swindon Town Centre of Excellence, progressing into their academy and youth systems before playing professionally.
After venturing to Australia in 2008 for a three-month holiday, he returned in 2010 and has called the Coast home ever since.
He also holds an FFA B Licence in coaching and will help United grow their community programs via the partner school and club networks.
