A 19-year-old Gold Coast flyhalf has emerged as the leading contender to don the coveted Brumbies No.10 jersey in Super Rugby next year.
The departure of 21-test Wallaby Christian Leali’ifano has left the Canberra side without an experienced option to succeed him, opening the door for Junior Wallabies playmaker Noah Lolesio to become the youngest starting flyhalf in Super Rugby.
The Southport School graduate is only just entering his third year out of high school but his coaches clearly believe he is ready to tackle the world’s toughest domestic rugby competition.
“I’m extremely grateful but at the same time I feel confident I’ll be able to (step up),” Lolesio said.
“It was great to have the experience of playing No.10 in the National Rugby Championship (with the Brumbies feeder team, Canberra Vikings), and with the calibre of players around me it just felt natural.
“Christian has been an awesome role model for me and if I’m half the human he is then I’ll be fine, but I’ve got to stay true to myself and keep doing what I do best.
“I love to facilitate others and get others involved in the game and then take my opportunities when they come.”
Lolesio must earn the jersey over fellow youngsters Mack Hansen, Bayley Kuenzle and Nudgee College schoolboy Reesjan Pasitoa.
