Australia touched the wall in a time of one minute and 57 seconds ahead of Russia and Spain on day one of the INSA Global Games in Brisbane, the world’s largest sporting event for elite athletes with an intellectual impairment.

“I cannot believe I just won a gold medal for my country,” said an emotional McTernan after the race.

“It’s a dream come true for me and my family, my swim club and my high school.”

But the gold rush didn’t stop there.

The 18-year-old and her Australian teammates Paige Leonhardt, Amy Cook and Jade Lucy won gold again on Wednesday night in the 4x 200m freestyle relay.

Throughout the five day long competition, the St Hilda’s swimmer also broke the Australian 200m backstroke record and collected four silver and one bronze medal.

St Hilda’s Aquatic head coach Ken Malcolm said it wasn’t surprising McTernan performed so well.

“I knew Maddie was capable of winning a Gold Medal for Australia,” he said.

McTernan will now continue to prepare for the Tokyo Paralympics set to be staged in August next year.
