Gold Coast sport Christmas wishlist

We got a lot in 2018 - like a Commonwealth Games - but Gold Coast sport is back with another list of wishes for 2019.

BRYCE’S BOUNTY

We begged last year for the Titans recruit to arrive. You delivered.

The problem was the gift of Bryce Cartwright was often more Gran’s knitted sweater than new pony. At times we even thought about seeing if we could return him.

However we start with a clean slate again in 2019. All we ask is that you can keep the talented NRL player injury-free. And full of confidence. Oh, and fully commited.

That would be a great gift for all of the Coast’s footy fans.

NESER’S NOD

Michael Neser.
Michael Neser.

Dolphins paceman Michael Neser might have made his one-day international debut in 2018 but is there any chance that could be upgraded to Test status in 2019?

He’s got the form on the board and has a growing reputation.

All we’re asking is that his banging on the national door eventually results in it being kicked in.

SAM SWANSONG

Sam Stosur.

We’re not sure if Sam Stosur is going to hang up her tennis racquet just yet but one last big crack at the Aussie Open would be awesome.

Oh, and if you could keep an eye on Bernie T for us that would be great too.

NPL AUDITIONS

OK, so this year you gave us Gold Coast United back after taking it away for a few seasons.

Now we are set to see Gold Coast Knights join them in football’s National Premier Leagues competition in 2019.

Is it too much to ask that both sides impress and maybe even make the finals?

We still dream of an A-League side, but we might save that wish up for a few more years.

BECKY’S BOYS

Becky Kay.
Becky Kay.

We were blessed to see Becky Kay compete against the men in the Queensland Golf Open this year (we appreciate seeing her beat a few too).

Any chance she could repeat the dose but this time finish even higher?

Oh, and if you could make sure Adam Scott returns home to compete in 2019 that would be great too.

GLORY DAYS RELOADED

We still dream of those old NBL days of the Rollers and Blaze. Ah, memories.

We’re not asking for a national basketball team again. Yet.

But we would love another big season of development in both the men’s and women’s QBL sides, the Rollers and Seahawks.

A state league title for any of those clubs would get the attention of the national bosses onto the Coast.

SUNS SHINE

Sure, it sounds like we’re asking a lot but stick with us here.

Our AFL boys are tipped by some to go winless, so we won’t ask for finals.

However we’ve been good this year and let some players go back home so if you were able to help us shut the mouth of some southern critics next year that would be a great gift in itself.

Talents kids like Ben King (pictured) are key, if you can make sure they stick around.

RUGBY HOPE

You know that Wallabies team, right? And the Reds?

Yeah, well, they haven’t been going very well lately.

In fact if the Aussie side was doing any worse then coach Michael Cheika would have to start picking himself in the team.

Any chance you could deliver a Gold Coast rugby hero in 2019? The game is crying out for someone to step up and the Coast is as good as place as anywhere.

Anyone will do.

Thanks for all those Commonwealth Games gold medals in the pool. They look great.

But with that whole fight about pay going on with FINA, it’s easy to forget there’s another big year of swimming events coming up, including the world championships in Korea.

All we want this year is pretty much what we got last year – success.

We lost some of our best surfing toys in 2018, like Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson.

We won’t ask for them back. Well, not for the whole year. But any chance we could get them in the water for a few local surfing events? Please.
